my bad if a similar thread has already been posted

Apparently around 3/4 of converts are women, according to the pro-islam camp and this stat is brought up by them repetitively when they come out with the generic cliched question "if islam is sexist why are three quaters of the converts women?"... as if numbers mean anything is automatically good.

I always been bemused about this with all the glaring sexism and chauvanism in islamic dogma. I mean you wouldn't get a group of African-Americans joining the KKK would you ?

Is it cos religion targets the emotionally vulnerable & as we know most women are more emotional creatures then men?

I'd say there is more than one answer to your question, but I wouldn't overlook the most obvious answer - that women are more often targeted for conversion by dawagandists. They don't really have an answer to the stinky misogyny inherent in the religion, so female converts are good PR.

Also, those numbers are not supported by evidence as much as hearsay and propaganda.

The Islamic dawah has a propaganda machine going that Islam liberates women. This is repeated ad nauseum by dawahgandists, and some women also find the appeal of an exoticized culture that *wants* them there (to show that "see, non-muslim women prefer our religion") to be very appealing.

Most women who convert to Islam, though, do it because they married a Muslim guy and he or his family required that she convert.

Incorrect assumption. Men are very emotional too. Many women are less emotional than many men. Both men and women are "emotional creatures".

More seriously, my first response to your question would be to question the statistic and ask for a source because that seems highly unnormal to have such a pronounced sex skew among converts. The number being cooked up would seem to be the most obvious answer to this question, imho.

I think it has more to do with the rules about marriage in Islam.

Muslim women cannot marry any non-Muslim man. So I think most religious Muslim women do not even try to find non-Muslim men interesting. So there is no incentive to approach them, so, ultimately, there is less contact between non-Muslim males and the religious Muslim world.

On the other hand, Muslim men can marry some non-Muslim women. So, I think, religious Muslim men can still consider non-Muslim women as "interesting". So there is an incentive to approach them. So, ultimately, non-Muslim females end up having more contact with the religious Muslim world.

Do not look directly at the operational end of the device.

It is easier for a Muslim male to woo a non-Muslim female and get into a relationship with them than for Muslim females to get into a relationship with non-Muslim males.

Also Muslim males are allowed to marry Christians and Jews, but Muslim females aren't allowed to marry non-Muslim males.

This explains the discrepancy between males/females converting to Islam.

Its not just that, its that the prosletysing impulse uses women who marry and convert to Islam as sheets of cotton to raise up on the flagpole of Islam as dawah ganda.

A basic premise of dawah is basically: bullshit loudly, repeatedly, incessantly and in a style of high drama in which not a single second is wasted lest the bullshit be called out. There is also a hysteria in all of this, a high pitched desperation to it all.

Muslims are hyper-sensitive to the misogyny of Islam being called out, so they go on the 'offensive', claiming that women are converting by the tens of thousands every hour, and thus this proves that Islam is actually, not misogynistic at all, not even a tiny bit.

Its a very febrile thing, these anxieties of Islam and how they express themselves in evangelical desperation.

I remember hearing about this in a psychology lecture that women especially in the developing world tend to have less opportunities for work, hence less exposure to various point of views. This results in women congregating in social circles with very similar views and this enforces religiosity if it is present.

Men on the other hand get a lot more exposure and its possible that because of that globally men are less religious. Nothing to do with the biology of the genders but the unfortunate circumstances.

As to why women convert ? beats me.

This also probably leads to a lot more men than women from Muslim families having the opportunity to go outside their communities and countries, giving them a higher chance of hooking up with non-Muslim women, compared to their sisters who are expected a lot more to marry someone within their clan/religious sect/community etc. because of religion, and also because of cultural restrictions on women's movement and education.

I used to social with this group of Muslim ladies who brought various converts, and its true all of them converted because they married/going to marry a Muslim, only one young lady converted while she is single not under the influence of a Muslim man(well that's the way it was told to me anyway), she was a Hindu before, even though Hindu has spirituality (sorry I hardly know anything about Hindu actually), but the class system in India would make Islam much better religion I believe ?

In the Indian caste system (although officially forbidden) it may indeed be profitable for some lower caste women to convert to Islam, and when married to a Muslim their life might improve.

Yeah, most people in generally let themselves go after 35. You might not find Arab men hot, but a lot of women do. Middle Eastern, Latino, and Mediteranean men are generally a good looking masculine bunch.

So true J & T, even now I find myself having to explain this to people. They just assume that I converted for a man. Besides, the "hawt Arab men" tend to like fair-skinned women so Black converts definitely won't be coming to Islam for that reason,lol.
