     OP - August 19, 2011, 05:26 PM

I thought this would be funny to share, but I got kinda sad in writing it.  My younger sister has been dealing with a number of personal issues over the years.  A while back, a relative talked her into going to a 'powerful' mullah as everyone suspected that someone was cursing her.  The mullah told her that (like charlatans the world over) that she had a dark cloud that was blocking her destiny/fate.  He further told her that a woman with red hair had put a curse on her.  But wouldn't you know it? He had a cure.  He gave her an amulet that contained some writing on a tiny slit of paper.  She was to wear the amulet for a number of weeks, then take out the tiny paper, dip it into the milk until the writing on paper disappeared and feed the milk to a dog.

Incidentally, a woman we had been very close to in our community had decided to tint her hair red - that was enough proof for my ENTIRE family to suspect (and accuse) this poor woman of having cursed my sister - and most in the community believe she has cursed their daughters as well - confirmed by there own voodoo guy.  We cut off relations and any food that she cooks for large gatherings, we are not allowed to touch.

A few weeks after she fed the milk to the dog, we got an email saying that the dog had gotten cancer. Miracle! Allahu Akbar! Send more money to that Mullah! I gotta admit, this STILL gives me pause sometimes.

After this incident, the level of paranoia and lunacy in our household increased tenfold, it became unbearable.  Still a believer, I would try to reason against this type of mentality and was surprised to learn that there was scriptural support for this, that things like the 'evil eye' and jadoo (magix) existed.  After months of some more batshit crazy stuff, and no change, I decided to work on my sister, why would god give someone that much power over you, talking about the hadith where the reading of a few surahs over a well lifted the curse off mohammad...etc...brought the level of lunacy down to mild.  The woo woo people slowly disappeared and things calmed down quite a bit. The lady with red hair though is still persona non grata. lol

There is a lady in Virginia who is supposedly very powerful, getting an audience with her takes months because she is booked solid, she charges hundreds of dollars for a few minutes of her time and supposedly has cured anything from children with autism to arthritis in old ladies by reading verses of the Quran over them.  Recently, a nonbelieving cousin asked me if she should take her asthmatic son to see her.

What is the role of voodoo in Islam?  Is it really a relic of the older cultures?  Does this type of voodoo exist in other Islamic cultures?

My in-laws took my wife to see a Mullah, she held 3 pieces of incense in he hands and he told her to close her eyes, he then started to recite something and one stick broke and then he started to talk to my wife, she replied to him in a different voice and he started hitting her with a cane to identify herself, the supposed Jinn was supposedly sent by my wife's ex- mother-in-law, he then went on reading and beating my wife till the jinn had left her body. My wife says she felt nothing etc and does not know what happened.

For me I think she was in a state where her mind was telling her to believe what she was hearing ( I know there is a term for it but I forget ).

So, Yes, this type of voodoo shit goes on in all cultures and all over the world.

    Just remembered, The Placebo Effect

Btw, my wife still believes in Jinns and shit, even believes she can here them, I just told her since I stopped believing in that shit I had no mo nightmares of shit holding me down while I am sleeping.

Magic and evil eye were the two most important concepts of islam that led me to disbelief, I have seen my mom go crazy with paranoia because that arab childfucker said 'evil eye is a fact'.

I wonder why are such authentic islamic bullshit not smeared on the face of islamic apolofuckists like Tortoise & co.

^ My mom sews evil eye charms on clothing, blankets, etc of the babies in our family.  I think she dabbles in a bit of voodoo herself, but won't really talk about it.  We burn incense type things to ward off the evil eye, she has this salt rock thing that she burns on the stove to figure out whether someone has been given the evil eye, the rock burns into either a phallic shape or a hole symbolizing the sex of the individual who has done the cursing (evil eye can be inadvertently done) and the more pronounced the shape, the stronger the curse.

I..um used to believe that uh if REAL Islam was taught to these people, such practices would disappear.   mysmilie_977

This type of stuff seems more convincing then the actual religious stuff. It took me a long while to shake them off.  Derren Brown has some interesting insights into this type of phenomena.  A lot of his stuff is up on youtube if you are interested.

Moroccan's are very very superstitious and some of them practise 'magic'.  S'hoor as they call it.

Anyway almost everything that went wrong in my life is attributed to magic by my step mum especially.  She believes my ex mother in law put a spell on me and my ex to destroy my marriage.  Once she even offered to have a spell put on my husband to make him obediant to me, and I laughed in her face.  All I had to do was get some of his spit, hair and cum and tada, my hubby would obey.  Good thing I'm not stupid lol.

Also I remember once I was interested in a boy in morocco because his muscles rippled and his body looked so buff when he used to row me across to the beach.

My step mother also attributed this infatuation to a spell that must have been put on me by his sister who gave me some cake.  She whisked me off to another lady to have another cake that would counter balance this spell.

I swear, some people are so fucking stupid.   Cheesy

Inhale the good shit, exhale the bullshit.

I'm moroccan, we have special powers according to my mum.

Although to be fair my step mum is not far wrong, some cakes are magical.

    Hash cakes are wizard's ambrosia.

While most of the things and practices you guys described have no place in 'real' islam, the basic foundation needed for such practices to thrive is proven from islamic scriptures... i.e belief in magic and evil eye.
once I had only doubted magic and evil eye that my mom scolded me telling that disbelief in evil eye is kufr, that was the day I told to myself : Fuck it, if this is Islam, I better off being a kaafir

Really?? I said that to my mum .. that all that shit is supersitious and I don't believe in black magic/evil eye etc and she said to me (when I was a muslim) that the evil eye is a fact cause it happened to MO too.  whistling2

I remember an imam telling me about one type of black magic when i was a teenager, where a black kettle follows you, if it touches you, you will die immidiately. He also told me about a story of a man who saved himself by running fast and entering a nearby mosque. The black kettle shattered on mosque door, so he suggested me I should do the same if I see one. Now I know it was all bullshit...
