I missed that! Excellent choice, Stuff. Holy fuck does that band rule! And Coffin Ships is probably in my top 20 metal songs.

Yeah, I figured Grave Digger would be lame.

Grave Digger may be lame but they are also awesome. A German band? Fronted by someone who looks like a permed Tyrion Lannister? Singing heroic songs about my home country? Yes please! Cheesy

Yeah, I figured Grave Digger would be lame. Glad you enjoyed yourself. I really want to see Blind Guardian someday. Even have a t-shirt of theirs and all.

    How did you like Germany?

Loved Germany. We were in an obscure part of it though for the gig, and taxis were a royal pain in the arse. People were very friendly however and a lot of them spoke english which was incredibly helpful Smiley They were all so shocked that we came all the way from England just for that lol. Germany gets little festivals like that all the time, lucky gits!

Was it an indoor fest? Wasn't there a way to get a hotel/hostel room near the location? When we went to Würzburg for Hammer of Doom we were withing walking distance of both the venue and the train station, and there were like ten other hotels in the vicinity. And Würzburg is a tiny town in Bavaria. But I'm glad your enjoyed it. Germans are awesome. Srsly. I had to deal with French people and Finnish people in similar situations, and Germans are by far the friendliest of the lot. And even if they don't speak English they TRY to understand you/make themselves understood, and they don't scoff at you for not mastering their language even though you're just a tourist  Roll Eyes

I used to, at some point, dream of going to Wacken, but either my taste in metal evolved faster than I realized, or the quality of billing deteriorated rapidly. There are still some great bands who play there every summer, but not enough to warrant the expense (last I checked it was 130 euros for the ticket, but it could be more now) and the trouble of going all the way to Shitsville, Germany, camp in the mud and stand in line for a long time to be able to shower Tongue

Plus honestly, the crowds are huge and I don't think I'll be able to see much of the performance (if I'm to watch it through the large screen, I'd rather see the youtube vids at home). I'm a front row kind of girl, so I'll stick to clubs/smaller indoor festivals Tongue Or, if I really want to go to a big outdoor fest, there are better ones in Germany (Headbanger Open Air comes to mind) and elsewhere in Europe.

It was indoor. There were plenty of hotels around it, but they were all booked out (and pricey). Ours was just over an hours walk away. We walked to the place on the first day, but in the evening it was too cold. Luckily we managed to somehow meet some Germans who were staying in the same hotel as us, so we shared a taxi with them.

They were only there for the first day though, but we managed to find someone else in the hotel who was going and got a ride with them (Metalheads are easy to spot Tongue). And luckily enough, someone offered us a ride back on the way home when we couldn't get the taxi place to answer the bloody phone.

    Germans really are awesome!

Yup. It's amazing how tolerant they are! I've also met a lot of Aussies when I was at MetalCamp, they were very similar and incredibly friendly!

That's when the internet comes in handy Smiley When you seriously start planning for a trip to Europe, you can check several websites that can hook you up with whataver concert/festival will take place at any given time. Off the top of my head, check out last.fm, events section.

Cant say I'm too keen on the 2012 line-up for Wacken so far (sold out anyway). But in general, it's location puts me off. I've only been to one major festival so far (MetalCamp Slovenia), I loved it because it was also part holiday. Wacken's location is a shithole in comparison.

I think we'll be doing MetalFest Croatia next year. The line-up looks great so far, and the location is amazing - http://www.hr.metalfest.eu/gallery.html

My partner found out about the one we went to through the Bloodstock forum (Bloodstock is a metal festival we have in the UK). I'd recommend looking through the GIGS, TOURS AND FESTIVALS subforum to find out about some of the stuff happening around the world: http://www.bloodstock.uk.com/community/viewforum.php?f=6

Any metal forum on the internet is probably a good place to find quick info on other festivals/gigs.

Another way would be regularly checking the official websites of your favourite bands (and "like" their official facebook pages) to find out if, when and where they're touring.

I listen to Disturbed for the same reasons I listen to bands like Korn. They arent musically the best, but the help release the pent up frustration and quell rage.

My fav metal(incl rock) bands are Iron Maiden and Alice in Chains. I cant believe no one posted Alice in Chains. They are very, very, very, important seminal band in the rock genre and one of my favourite rock bands of all time and dont say they arent metal, if you do then you dont know the development of rock music.

In terms of best vocalists/frontmans they are there with Audioslave
