Thanks Shahid/Wiss/Peru - thanks for the correction.

I've heard quite a few British Muslims (of Pakistani/Indian origin) say Assalamuwalaykum - it's wrong but seems to have become a habit for some.

Is is a bastardisation of the reply when someone greets you i.e. wa'alaikum assalaam?

When George Galloway begins his speeches, he usually starts the speech with "Wasalaam" or "Wasalaamu alaikum".

Surely that's wrong?  You're supposed to say "Wasalaam" when you end your speech, right?

You can see examples over HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE, and HERE.

Galloway is such a joke. Yes, it's wrong.

Though it seems British Muslims have developed their own Anglicized Muslim-Speak or as IsLame put it a sort of bastardization of common Muslim words and phrases.

Yeah, the wa is a seperate word to Salaam or 3lay ( علي ). Wa means "and" so it should be used in replies or when you're done speaking.

what does asslaamu alaikum literally mean?

    Peace be upon you (plural)

"Peace" = as-Salam, "upon" = 3lay and "you" = -kum, the masculine plural suffix for direct speech.

If you wanted to adress a group of females it would be As-Salam Alaikunna.

And when you are addressing a mixed gathering you still use the masculine plural.

Even in grammar men take precedence over women lol  grin12

Aye. Although that's a feature of Arabic rather than Islam, I suppose a Christian Arab would address a mixed gathering in just the same way.

I believe the concept is the same in pretty much all languages... In english, the word 'Man' is used when speaking of humanity in general. ie; mankind, man's best friend.. etc.

Turkish has no grammatical gender thankfully.  Smiley

Russian has no feminine/masculine distinction in plural, either. It is treated as another "gender."
