  • Ever Heard Of A Muslim Vegan?
     OP - November 09, 2011, 10:16 PM

A Ryerson University Student accuses the senior faculty of discrimmination against her because she is a vegan and takes it to the Human Right Tribunal of Ontario. The Muslim part comes into this because in the comments section she states she is a Muslim.

So why is this any more noteworthy than a Christian vegan?

By the way, her complaint seems rather spurious to me. Also, saying that she could not possibly be racist because she isn't a WASP is silly. She may not be racist, but the argument is idiotic.

How does she reconcile this with animal sacrifice during Eid Mubarak or with the Quran that commands Muslims to eat meat.

Christians have the choice of whether or not to eat an animal.

Probably the same way that Christians reconcile all sorts of biblical silliness with what they personally want to believe: by either ignoring it or indulging in mental and verbal shenanigans to sweep the problem under the carpet.

I've never heard that Muslims absolutely had to eat meat, and I'm sure there have been quite a few who didn't.

There are a couple of Islamic beliefs I am aware of that conflict with her stance, which might make it strange that someone with her views on animals would be a Muslim. The first I think is obvious, that she is equating humans with animals. Basically giving them the same social status. In Islam this is totally incorrect, as humans are deemed superior to animals, and humans are not considered to be animals themselves (I learned that one when I tried to ask a friend's kindergartener what kind of animal he was, carnivore or herbivore, and my friend gasped and stopped me saying 'he's not an animal!').

The second is slightly related, in that not only are humans superior to animals, but that animals were created to serve humans, and one way they serve is to be human food. In the Qur'an meat is explicitly stated as allowed food, with the exception of pork of course, and I have heard many Muslims claim that being a vegetarian or vegan is against Islam, and possibly even shirk, because it is a case of someone making something haram for themselves that allah has made halal.

Ok, but traditionally in Christianity humans are not regarded as animals either. Not only that, but the Bible does state that animals are for the use of humans too. Obviously there is also mention of eating some animals. Not so different, really. Smiley

    Sura 5:87-88

You who believe! Do not make haram the good things which Allah has made halal for you, and do not transgress; indeed, Allah does not like the transgressors. And eat of what Allah has provided for you, lawful and good, and fear Allah, in Whom you are believers.

Humans are the caretakers of animal and that is in the Bible. Yes the Bible does mention the eating of some animals. The Bible also says in the beginning Adam and Eve did not eat meat.

Yes but what Adam and Eve did has very little to do with what anyone else should be doing.

quite well. i left islam before i stopped being a vegetarian.

i actually did some research about it and found out there's nothing in islam against vegetarianism, the catch being that you can be a vegetarian all you like but you can't tell people they can't kill animals. of course that never stopped me, because really, who follows every word of their religion?

actually, there are some pretty good arguments for vegetarianism/veganism by muslims, considering there are hadiths about treating animals humanely and how the meat industry is a far cry from that.

    islam is pro animal welfare.
