You heard of this dude?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muhammad_ibn_Zakariya_al-Razi#On_ReligionMuhammad ibn Zakariyā Rāzī (Persian: محمد زکریای رازی Mohammad-e Zakariā-ye Rāzi), known as Rhazes or Rasis after medieval Latinists, (August 26, 865 – 925) was a Persian[1][2] polymath,a prominent figure in Islamic Golden Age,[3] physician, alchemist and chemist, philosopher, and scholar.
He wrote 3 books about religion:
The Prophets' Fraudulent Tricks (مخارق الانبياء)
The Stratagems of Those Who Claim to Be Prophets (حيل المتنبيين)
On the Refutation of Revealed Religions (نقض الادیان).
"On what ground do you deem it necessary that God should single out certain individuals [by giving them prophecy], that he should set them up above other people, that he should appoint them to be the people's guides, and make people dependent upon them?[21]"
On the Qur'an, Razi said:
"You claim that the evidentiary miracle is present and available, namely, the Koran. You say: "Whoever denies it, let him produce a similar one." Indeed, we shall produce a thousand similar, from the works of rhetoricians, eloquent speakers and valiant poets, which are more appropriately phrased and state the issues more succinctly. They convey the meaning better and their rhymed prose is in better meter. ... By God what you say astonishes us! You are talking about a work which recounts ancient myths, and which at the same time is full of contradictions and does not contain any useful information or explanation. Then you say: "Produce something like it"?![21]
From the beginning of the human history, all of those who claimed to be prophets were, in his worst assumption, tortuous and devious and with his best assumption had psychological problems."
During a debate with Biruni, Ibn Sina stated:"Or from Muhammad ibn Zakariyyab al-Razi, who meddles in metaphysics and exceeds his competence. He should have remained confined to surgery and to urine and stool testing—indeed he exposed himself and showed his ignorance in these matters."

Not only was Razi's criticism like a BILLION times worse, being genuine statements as opposed to a work of fiction by Rushdie - but they were debated, and he died in his bed.
This is the 8th and 9th century, and people call the Taliban REAL ISLAM.

The reason this is complicated, is because the history of Muslims is NOT linear. Christianity in Europe went nutjob>secular quite gradually over time, with the exception of Puritanism.
Does the above situation not sound like a forum board of the 9th century? People overreacting, fiery language etc.
