I used to do image manipulation quite a lot when I was younger, but they were more complex than just making a photo clearer/stand out so as a result I have a tendency to over-think things. I'll get used to it after some practice. Thanks for the tips.

Yeah, manipulation is quite different. With retouching/processing it's best to keep things simple.

I shoot mainly in Manual, I'm too controlling to use the other two Tongue

Hey, whatever works. I personally use either aperture or shutter priority because the camera meters far quicker than I can, and I'm a lazy bugger. That said, all-manual is good discipline.

I'm actually starting to get used to using aperture and shutter more now, but previously I always found the images came out too dark or not to like my liking in some way. Fiddling with Manual has helped me understand things better so now I can actually take better pics with the other two modes. Though occasionally I get frustrated with it and switch back to Manual! Heh. I love snow, except for the travel inconvenience it causes.

I knowww, I keep thinking, I'll get around to it, and I take it out sometimes, then put it to the side Tongue and start snapping. It's just one of those tedious things, I'll get around to some day. It's just I get so excited about the thought of going out to take photos I just get stuck in Tongue

    I have a Canon

Stardust, the two important things from the manual to know about are Aperture and Shutter. Low aperture allows you to shoot a subject with a blurry background. Shutter speed allows you to decide how quickly you want the camera to shoot a picture, this allows you to capture fast action (like a flying bird) without any blurriness or shoot in the night without a flash.

Just take your time with it. Nothing wrong in using it as a point-and-shoot. It's only when you need specific types of shots, then you need the manual. Generally people buy expensive cameras to do just that, but it's not always the case!

Smiley Thanks for that. I'll try playing about with those parameters next time I take the cam out.

I like that blurred background effect, but didn't know how to get it XD I would just rely on the camera's auto settings, sometimes it would, sometimes it wouldn't also the focusing as well, :/ Yeah, I need to do some homework XD

How to get the blurry background:

If you go to Av mode (it's on the dial, see manual if you need help). Set the ISO to Auto (the manual tells you how). Then set the Aperture as low as possible (something like 4.5 or however low yours goes). Then zoom in as much as possible onto whatever subject and shoot away. Practice on a few different items.

Canon has some good tutorials on youtube, you might find them more interesting than the manual! Here's a vid to get you started-

Hopefully you find that easier to learn from Afro

They're good, but I think the saturation is a little too high. The colours don't quite look realistic.

Does anyone if Sigma lenses are any good? I want to get a decent telephoto at some point in the near future, but I don't wanna spend a whole load if it's not required. Sigma's are pretty affordable but I'm not too sure why. Are the photos good quality? I don't care about the build.

So just had a quick look on Amazon. One major difference I see is that Sigma lacks image stabilisation, is that going to be a problem? I've had a look at some of the customer shot photos that Amazon provides and it takes some amazing photos! So is it worth going for? You can view it here:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sigma-70-300mm-f4-5-6-Macro-Canon/dp/B000AM7CJ0/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1338398978&sr=8-10

The alternative is a 55-250mm Canon (I cant afford the equivalent Canon 70-300mm) which has image stabilisation. It's only about £30 more if I stick to used lenses.
