Aint nuthin bout that T pain shit.

Would understanding the techniques behind DJ-ing electronic genres and being able to produce electronic subgenres of music help you better producing/composing hip hop instrumentations?

    Quote
In the mid 1970s Kraftwerk, released several songs that would later become the blueprint for breakbeats. A few of those tracks were then used later to define the genre. Fast forward to the late 1970s and early 1980s, hip-hop turntablists, such as Kool DJ Herc, began using several breaks in a row to form the rhythmic base for hip-hop songs. Kool DJ Herc's breakbeat style was to play the same record on two turntables and play the break repeatedly by alternating between the two records. This style was copied and improved upon by early hip hop DJs Afrika Bambaataa and Grand Wizard Theodore. This style was extremely popular in clubs and dance halls because the extended breakbeat provided breakdancers with more opportunities to showcase their skills.

Yeah, if you can find the right sample and beats. Though i dont really know much about Hip-hop production because im more interested in the lyrical content of hip hop song, how it is delivered and rhymes with the beat, for me thats my criterion for considering a song to be dope.

What kind of "electronic music" are you thinking of?  With its heavy use of samplers, hip hop music was one of the first popular electronic genres, so it already falls under this umbrella and forms the foundation for DJ'ing those other (sub)genres.

most hip hop beats are made electronically and have been since the beginning. sampling other songs was easily introduced because the technology for it was already in use. how do you think those kicks and claps are recorded? samplers, drum machines and sequencers.

also, auto-tuning is an inherent part of the mixing and mastering process. all sounds go through this process of slightly altering the frequency, etc. to smoothen everything out. the problem is that today it's overdone to compensate for the fact that some people can't sing to begin with.

In a field like hip-hop, where written and verbal communication are the two primary forms of work production, the mind or intellect of the artist should be viewed as the very thing responsible for success. However, unlike other writing-intense fields, the mind of hip-hop artists is often the least valued and least lauded trait. Hip-hop artists, whether they realize it or not, have more to offer. They are more than the things that they possess. They are writers. They are thinkers. This article examines intellectualism in hip-hop music—its presence, shortcomings, and ultimate value

Something I soon figured after listening to better rap songs is the thing about rap is that the standards and quality of rap depends on the intelligence and motivations of the rappers. Wayyy too many stupid ass brothers in the game today. East Coast cats markedly developed rap in terms of lyrical ingenuity because of NY cats. Sure they were spitting in ebonics and represented the impoverished black urban/sub urban culture but because they were more intelligent so were their rhymes.

OP: "Something I soon figured after listening to better rap songs is the thing about rap is that the standards and quality of rap depends on the intelligence and motivations of the rappers."

That's pretty much common sense.  Holds true for anything in all walks of life.

On-topic: trance or something with a steady beat is good for Hip-Hop.

Its not as simple as you might read it. Music is tied with entertainment. It doesnt require intelligence/perceptiveness/deep thinking/lofty ideas to make an entertaining tune that isnt steeped in meaning. It doesnt require intellectual rigour to produce a mainstream pop type song. You just need to have a knack for coming up with tunes.

    case in point

A catchy tune doesn't mean it's quality music.  As a general rule, mainstream is always shit.  Always has been, always will be.

Not all mainstream music is shit. Gorillaz isnt shit. Audioslave isnt shit. Being mainstream doesnt mean a specific band is shit. Its just so that oftentimes mainstream stuff tends to be shitty. Who are responsible as such? I guess its the fact that most people have really bad taste or are too naive to be subjected into consuming what fucked up stations play.

If that's what you were trying to say then why dispute what I said earlier in the first place?  It's still common sense especially when it comes to music.

Also, reread what I said.  I didn't say every mainstream musician is shit.  I said, "as a general rule".

"Not as bad as it is now compared to the past."

That's not true and it's completely a matter of personal taste.

i disagree. there seems to be a lot of close-mindedness towards pop music. it's almost like it's become this abstract monolith that people just hate without even knowing why besides that it's "commercial". there are a few mainstream pop artists who do make good complex quality music that shows a lot of talent. case in point is usher, whose productions i think rival those of producers in the edm world.

of course there's also the really shit music, and on the other end of the spectrum is david guetta, who came out of the edm scene, turned pop and now thinks making a 2-bar melody makes a good song. not that a simple song can't be good, it just needs to be done properly. there are a lot of simple pop songs that are both catchy and pretty good.

Pop has no real meaning to me.  No soul.  The music isn't even written by the musician representing the music most of the time which takes away A LOT of the humanity of a performance.  I dislike empty and meaningless lyrics in any genre.

Edit: music is more than just good production and something catchy.  It's more than just mindless entertainment.  It can be a means for advocating human rights, a way to connect to people on a meaningful level, and a bridge between cultures.

Case in point, delta blues.  The music is pretty raw and simple but the message and the feeling that comes through is what makes it so amazing.

i don't think good music needs to have soul, sometimes a good song is one that just makes you wanna dance. although there are pop songs that do have a meaning. heck some pop artists are influenced by soul music and their music is quite personal, eg. alicia keys.
  • Re: question to you music cats: of what use is electronic music to hip hop?

I suppose that's where we differ.  Music that's just good for dancing I consider to be "ok" but not good.  Some pop, yeah though I tend to shy away for personal reasons.  That's why I didn't say all of mainstream is shit.  Just as a general rule it is... That includes mainstream acts that aren't pop.

yeh i guess. once i got into music production i started really appreciating beats, just how they develop and how they sound. i focus on the aesthetics just as much as on the meaning. and i don't think pop music generally is meant to have a meaning. it's meant to be indulgent, for people to go out and have fun. it has its purpose.

yeah, even me too i prefer lyrical content and how they are delivered like i stated before plus the use of wordplay just makes it perfect. i prefer the type of songs that have several layers of meaning. these are the main reasons why i like classic rock and hip-hop,especially East Coast/NY cats like what passingaround stated, i think i can be biased on those cats over others though i appreciate West Coast rappers like NWA who were the ground-breaking acts that they even got a letter from FBI for  this one and i also appreciate few of the southern rappers like UGK,Geto boys and Outkast

I'll put it this way the West Coast were the best for their beats and use of sampling. East Coast for their lyricism. A few old school acts from the South were good. But crunk is the worst thing ever to happen to rap.

I consider any crunk music fan as dumb. Yeah, i agree westcoast got the best beats when it comes to hip hop thats where i give credit to Dr. Dre  but i questioned his street cred as a gangbanger.

    Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson is one of the greatest entertainer,a showman and a genius on stage but he has always been myopic in his thinking about the music business:how many records are being bought by his fans? How long does it take to get to number one? How many tickets are sold? For him, commercialism is the key.In public eye he's too formal, though its understandable due to his background considering his father and privacy as well.

Unlike Madonna, who has managed to combine commerciality with artistic vision, she always has something to communicate with her music and usually a clear-eyed vision as how to go about it.

However, they are both great mainstream artists that are worth to be considered.
