     OP - February 07, 2012, 12:10 PM

As some of you already know, my cat Flopsy gave birth last night to 5 lovely kittens. They all seem fine and are feeding well Smiley

Here's a pic of the new mum and her little ones...

Here's a shot of her giving birth to one of the kittens

We'll probably keep two, and give the other 3 to loving homes.

The little black and white one is especially cute.  I'd keep that one if it were me.

They are all feeding as far as I can see. Mum is refusing to leave the nest. Don't know how long cats can go without pooping.

my niece is a vet technician, she said its perfectly normal,
mama KNOWS instinctively what she needs to do, leave
them be, and when mom is ready she will poop.  Could be
another day or two at most, but that is perfectly normal.

The kittens look pretty big and healthy!
I'm sure Flopsy will know what to do (and when) instinctively. She's probably exhausted so just leave some nibbles and water nearby. Do you have an extra litter tray? Maybe you can keep one in the same room as her, so she doesn't have to go far. New mums are always anxious to run back to the babies Grin

They are bloody needy buggers those kittens are. Mum's managed to make it out of her nest twice so far, she took a dump today finally Tongue I'm feeding her in her nest atm, not the most comfortable way but don't have a choice. All her food/drink stuff is nearby, but she prefers to remain in her nest.

Anyone know how long the kittens remain this needy for? When will the mum start to feel more comfortable to leave the nest?

    Don't worry about it.
I have had some experience with both newborn puppies and kittens and their mums and imo it's completely down to the mum herself as to when she will feel comfortable to start leaving the nest on regular basis.
At any rate it shouldn't be more than a few days.

    Peruvianskies

sounds like everything is going really well and normal Smiley

She will let you know when she is ready.  Could be up to
a week or so before she is comfortable leaving them for
more than a few minutes at a time.  They need that first
milk as it has all the essential vitamins they need to survive
and yeah, they are greedy buggers, and that will be so
for a couple of weeks lol.  Cant wait to see follow up pics
as they grow, open their eyes, and start revealing amazing
    and crazy personalities lol.

Such a  beautiful part of nature to witness, isnt it?  One of
our cats had her kittens in my sister's bed while we were
asleep LMAO   Was so glad it was in her bed, and not mine lol.
We had a nest for her, too, but she chose my sister's bed  Cheesy
    I REALLY enjoyed that *snickers*

Ok, question. Why is the cat called Flopsy when it has stand-up ears?

She had that name when we got her from the shelter Tongue We felt it suited her personality so we kept it. She's learnt her name now so no point changing it any more.
