emergence describes the 'emergence' of complexity and order from simplicity and disorder. All evolution is emergent in this sense, because evolution is just a couple of simple rules.
I think what they are really talking about here though is the emergence of some property than cannot be easily explained as a sum of it's parts. Something that seems to transcend a material explanation. i.e, all those properties of life that creationists attribute to god. For example, consciousness.
there is a BBC documentary called 'the secret life of chaos' that is really good. It used to be on youtube, but i cant find it now
