The BBC coverage has been excellent. Obviously its been focussed on British success but they have been full of fair play towards non British athletes and given decent coverage all round. When Pearson won last night she thanked her family in England with whom she lived and trained - Aussie - Pom unity  cheers

Ponor was awesome in the final.

it was a great floor final, really enjoyed it. was rooting for Ponor but even though her score may have been a little higher, i think maybe Raisman would have won anyway

She's such a welcome change from the Daddy's Little Princess prancing bullshit that infests the gymnastics these days. I'm always thinking "FFS stop trying to impress the pedos and get on with the gymnastics". Then Ponor walks on and it's like "Hey, we've got a woman in the women's gymnastics! Things are looking up". yes

not sure about this. gymnasts naturally start when they are at a young age, particularly the females since strength is not as crucial compared to the mens. i think the young age is simply a reflection of when they are physically at their best for the events. don't forget, Ponor won 3 golds in athens when she was 16.

The BBC coverage is getting on my nerves too - far too GB-centric. I don't remember it always being so one-eyed.

the tv coverage has - but with so many medals for GB, i think it's quite natural - they do the interviews for the medals won that day etc. but then don't dwell on those medals into the next day. what is much better is that on the BBC website you can pretty much watch any event you want, live. i think they've actually put a lot into the internet coverage to make it really easy for the viewer to watch what and when they want. also come to think of it on the tv, the bbc spread the coverage over three channels and you can also choose even more sport through the interactive tv - a lot of the time no team GB is featured on the extra channels or on the interactive. not sure if you have these features available in japan though

    I have, er, enabled them.

I suppose I'd built the BBC up in my mind as the antidote to NHK.

I'd forgotten they're a national broadcaster doing what national broadcasters do. But doing it well.

Oh sure. Raisman was technically excellent and I think she was scored fairly. I'd much rather watch Ponor though.

It's not the age as such. It's the subculture that seems to have developed, where they try to be all cutesy all the time. It's as if they can't think of any other way to present a female gymnast, and it gets rather nauseating en masse.

It doesn't happen in other events, even if the athletes are the same age. It just seems to be restricted to female gymnasts.

Anyway, interview with Anna Meares and Sally Pearson today. The talking head asked Meares how the pressure was in front of the crowd. She said "Well I felt a bit awkward going out in front of 6,000 people in a yellow skin suit, but Sally had to go out in front of 80,000 people in just her bra and undies."

I gotta agree. I think the beeb have done a first-rate job. Overall the coverage and commentary has been refreshingly balanced and fair. Great selection of commentators, clearly passionate and knowledgeable about their respective sports and just as appreciative of foreign talent as homegrown. While I'm obviously rooting for Team GB and so pumped about the success we've had so far, most of the athletes I'd been looking forward to watching are from elsewhere. I don't feel I've missed out on getting a chance to see any of them in all their glory.

Only a few days left. Every evening when I switch on and see the stadium all full, and it gets darker gradually and then its all lit up, with brilliant punditry from Michael Johnson, and excellent athletics, is very magical and delightful.

I think the whole nation will be on a downer next week when its all over.

Yeah, I think I'm going to be genuinely upset when it ends. I don't even want to think about it.

    Some more Catalina Ponor:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PKY9wCbsSRk

She looked smoking hot today, winning the silver medal for floor. I think she deserved a higher score, but maybe I am biased. The crowd seemed to think she was scored low too. Still, she can't win gold every Olympics I suppose.

Doesn't look too shabby in civvies either:

Having said that, there is still so much I've missed and need to catch up on. I've seen hardly any of the water sports. Hardly any of the throwing, lifting, jumping and all that stuff. Only a few highlights of the rowing and sailing. Not all of the Judo, boxing, and wont be able to watch all the Taekwondo or wrestling in real-time. I've still got track and field events to watch. Still got football and hockey to watch. Still not seen even all of the gymnastics. Nor all of the tennis. Even if I had all day to watch it, I'd still be missing out on so much. I really hope there will be some way to catch up, not just on the main BBC1 stream. iPlayer or something, or torrents, or youtube.

Too fucking busy, and vice versa.

Good talent from Afghanistan in the Taekwondo, Rohullah Nikpai. Dropped a nice axe kick on the other guys head. He won the country's first ever medal at Beijing, maybe he can get another.

Seems like the armour technology needs a little bit of work. Some good connections don't register a score. And those weird jutting shoulderpads seem to obstruct a lot of upward kicks to the head. Whats the point of them?

Nicola Adams was brilliant, first woman to win a gold medal for boxing in the Olympics - she was doing the Ali shuffle in the last round!

    Australia Update:

Nicola Adams is from Leeds, which means that added to all the other winners from just that county of England, Yorshire has won more Olympic medals that the whole of Australia so far  grin12
