  • Do you drink alcohol?
     OP - July 26, 2012, 05:58 PM

Hi all. I'm new here and I'm not an ex-muslim, but an ex-mormon. I'm not from britain either but sweden. I'm curious about ex-muslims. Mormonism and Islam has, among other things, this in common that drinking alcohol is evil so I'm wondering if you have the same experience as we have when leaving. It would be interesting to compare notes. Do you drink alcohol? If you do, did you feel like god was going to smite you the first time you purchased alcohol? That's what I felt, and yes I'm a godless heathen that sometimes drinks alcohol, condemn me all you want.  Smiley

    Hi breforts

We have an ex Mormon member here from America, called Deusvult Smiley

Although the experiences of people who leave different religions have different contexts, there are commonalities of experience too for sure.

There are similarities for sure. I read the "thing's muslims say to ex-muslims"-thread. Alot of the stuff were things a mormon would say.

I drink.  See nothing wrong with it.
Even when I was a Muslim, I didn't see drinking as a sin.  It is stated as bad in the koran, but never a sin.
And I never really cared about the hadith.

I don't drink as much as when I was a muslim.  Now its just more casual.

funny how eating pork or having a drink become these little celebrations of breaking free from religion..
it's like a little obstacle of fear that one climbs everytime you take a bite or sip of that wonderful magic juice of the gods...

    I drink to Allah.

      Cheesy indeed!  cheers

    From the drinkers Bible:

19: 77   Never trust a person who winks! rofl rofl

But on the other hand a subsequent verse seems to abrogate this :

45:54  Anyone who winks frequently is one of us

Congrats! you are a drinker! Cheesy Cheesy

Used to drink a lot as a teenager, now I hardly ever touch the stuff and if I do it's only a few, never to excess.

    Hej brefots.

I have drunk alcohol a few times but it's not really my thing. The first time I did I was too busy thinking it tasted disgusting to worry about god smiting me.

A bit off-topic though, but I get a bit confused when I see how Mormonism has spread to Europe. You are from Sweden, I've seen a huge Mormon church in Finland, etc. I mean that faith strikes me as being so... American. It's so intertwined with the history, the people and the land where it was born and blossomed... It's difficult for me to understand how it could get such a foothold in countries/societies like that.

Then again, the LDS Church is loaded, so that might explain it.

I prefer to take my alcohol in enema form. No strong taste, near-instant buzz and the colon is sparkly and clean for a week afterwards.

My favourite drink is Gin and Tonic. I also like red and white wine. I think beer and lager is overrated, although I have it now and then.

A lot of beer is terrible, generic stuff sold by supermarkets by the corporate giant breweries. Its worth seeking out real ale, European beers, independent beers made by independent breweries.

For me, a nice cold beer at the end of a long day, especially a hot day - so satisfying.

One of the possible factors behind the Western success of capitalism, industrialisation and the enlightenment is possibly small beer.  In a world where drinking water is deadly the antiseptic qualities of alcohol provide a very significant evolutionary advantage.  Puzzling that allah got that so wrong.

That has puzzled me too, especially as my father is a real bigot when it comes to america. Why did he convert to mormonism when he despise everything american? Go figure. And the LDS church is loaded because it takes 10% of your income and gives nothing back. Members are supposed to do everything that needs to be done, and alot of busywork that benefits no one aswell, for free.

Here in sweden you can go to some pubs and drink when you're 18 but you cannot go to the liqour store and purchase anything until you're 20. This however doesn't stop literally everyone to start drinking when they are 15.

Kinda unrelated, but I got carded at a liquor store in Urjala, Finland (went to buy some strawberry liquor for my grandmother-in-law). I will forever be grateful to that cashier for assuming I was ten years younger than I actually am. <3 <3 <3

Never really like to drink, sometimes drink red wine with wife just to have a romantic feeling.

Drink beer with friends when socializing with friends.

    But Moccha Cappuccino taste better.

Because of the consequentualist nature of the Word of Wisdom (the name of the Mormon dietary suggestions) I did feel some guilt about starting drinking but not a lot. A huge part of it was the social component. If anyone say me drinking it was social death in the church. Sex made me feel extremely guilty though and looking back caused a lot of the issues that I had to work through.

So once again I'm left with the classic Irish man's dilemma, do I eat the potato or do I let it ferment so I can drink it later?
