Agnostic

First hi everyone, its been a while.
What do the terms theist, agnostic and atheist actually mean?
Now the only reason I ask is because a "believer" made such a fuss about it, and I just want to make sure that I dont have it twisted.
I always took anyone who believed in a God as a theist. In addition I always percieved the personal spiritual classification as a quadrant with one axis being gnostic (strength) and theist (position of belief). So one can be, gnostic theist, gnostic atheist, agnostic theist and agnostic atheist.
Since most (sane!) people concede that they do not have true proof we are on both spectrums agnostics.
NOW! here is where the problem lies, why do some people specifically claim to be exclusively agnostic? Especially when they hold the belief that some superior being indeed does exist? Doesnt that simply make them an agnostic theist which makes them like pretty much any other theist?
My bone of contention is that they use agnostic as if it is deviod stance from theism or atheism.
So have I got it wrong? If I have can someone point me where I can read on this?
If I have it right, then can someone please offer links/videos which may explain this so I can pass it on to the "agnostic".
Thanks
