  • I have decided to become an Islam apologist
     OP - August 15, 2012, 11:13 PM

Because I'm tired of crap like http://freethoughtblogs.com/taslima/2012/08/13/islams-most-terrible-law-it-prohibits-adoption-of-children/.

Taslima Nasreen posted something about Islam prohibiting adoption. My first reaction to this was "Wtf?" until I looked into it a bit, and found out it's a popular misconception, driven in no small part by Muslims themselves who will say "adoption is forbidden in Islam" because they take the word adoption to include naming your adopted children after yourself, as is common. So there's some room where "Adoption is illegal in Islam" can be a true statement, but you have to bend over backwards for it, I think.

I left a small comment saying what she wrote was misleading (and embarrassingly enough accidentally replied to the wrong person, but I can't delete it and didn't want to duplicate it by leaving a comment on the main page so I didn't repeat myself), and it went into the moderation queue. In the next day or two, she edits her original post to include that you can foster children in Islam without taking my comments out of moderation. I left another comment saying pretty much the same thing, and she responded with a link that bizarrely enough actually supports my side of the argument.

As of right now, my original comments are still in moderation.

I am irritated, to put it bluntly. With the incredible amount of crap information floating around the internet, having an ex-muslim on a prominent blog network writing something that you can blast a hole through by reading the wiki page on adoption in Islam is more than a little tiresome. Attending to criticism with due nuance makes your arguments more forceful, not less, and given the incredible amount of plainly stupid things there are in Islam, why anyone would write something like this is beyond me, frankly.

I'm starting to feel like I'm spending more time defending Islam than critisizing it. So given that, I have decided to become a Muslim apologist. Not only am I already doing the work, I have come to realize that fairly representing the religion is surely the best way to demolish it. I will soon revert (revert revert?), change my name to almuslima, and start dawahganding your asses. I'd start running if I were you.

I think it would be more aptly called being a truth advocate.

This is also funny: she has included the link she used in her reply to me in her original post, but in the process typo'd it to forbids "abortion" instead of "adoption".

Yes! call yourself a truth advocate.

An apologist tries his utmost to whitewash this :

I often wonder how the different hadith were created, whoever wrote that one must have had a sense of humor.

It's too late for me Abood. But what about you? Have you considered coming back to Islam? The Quran is a miracle you know. Do you know that there are no contradictions in it? I have rock solid evidence, it says so in the book!

    Subhanallah!

so what is the problem almulhida ? So she read your comment and corrected her blog., don't you that should make you happy instead of angry??

This is misleading, you are allowed to provide foster care and be a guardian for orphans and abandoned children..

Is there a reason my comments are still in moderation?

Anyway, this is still misleading. There’s nothing stopping you in Islamic Law from taking in abandoned children and raising them. The rules that govern it are needlessly cruel to the children involved, and yes it’s not adoption as understood in the west, but there is nothing in principle that forbids you from taking in children and giving them a home, for life.

Your link speaks to my side of the argument, as Winterwind has done the work of quoting for me. I realize “adoption is forbidden in Islam” is a common misconception, driven in no small part by the fact Muslims themselves say it, but they say it with the understanding that adoption entails naming your adopted children after yourself. Under a looser definition, Islam does not prohibit adoption, but your original post gives no hint of this or other ways you could take care of abandoned children within the confines of the religious laws and juxtaposing that with the problem of homeless children strongly gives the impression that Muslims are helpless to offer any kind of aid.

Calling this misleading was being generous. You are in fact perpetuating a common misconception, and that does no one any good.

    o.k.,  so what is misleading??

Do not let silence become your legacy.. Question everything

I said it was still misleading in my followup because she only acknowledged the possibility of foster care, and not the possibility to take in a child as thought it were your own and raising them in your home. She has still not acknowledged that. The part that made me angry is that she corrected her blog seemingly in response to my comment without actually publishing my comment. I didn't think anything of this at first, there's a million reasons why she might not have taken my comments out of moderation, but I did ask and she neither gave me a reason nor did she publish them. They are still in moderation.

Nothing wrong with being an apologist, just don't be a dishonest one.  There are those everywhere.  I don't think I've said hi yet, so I'll say hi almulhida  Smiley

So once again I'm left with the classic Irish man's dilemma, do I eat the potato or do I let it ferment so I can drink it later?

well that is true., in Islam you can only do foster care but can act as parents/real parents of that child and you can not take   the child as if the child is your own"
