  • Vitamin D deficiency in women who fully cover.
     OP - September 07, 2012, 05:24 PM

So something fascinating I was doing research on and I have not come across in the few years researching Islam and issues Muslim women face.  Never imagined there would be such a thing, because I figure hey whatever, hijab, niqab it's just clothing right? It doesn't really do harm except for maybe social perceptions. Then I cam across some articles talking about Rickett's disease which is becoming an epidemic for women because covering of the skin prevents sunlight from providing vitamin D and often they are not concious of getting vitamin D elsewhere. Here is a medical excerpt talking about this.

    Quote
"The face, head and arm covering Burqa/hijab religious clothing, which many Muslim women are forced to wear, has been shown by numerous medical and university studies WORLDWIDE to cause severe and long term vitamin D deficiency in the women who wear it. (Many of these studies were conducted in MUSLIM countries). This vitamin D deficiency is caused by the lack of sunlight to these women's skin because of the religious/body covering clothing which they are often forced to wear. (human skin cannot produce vitamin D without significant exposure to sunlight). This chronic vitamin D deficiency accumulates and worsens as these women age, causing many severe diseases and afflictions, which include:...

-Rickett's in Muslim women's unborn children caused by vitamin D deficiency in the womb. (Rickett's is a severe and lifelong deformity of the leg bones)."

On the other side. Here is a pro-Islam site that says that such medical claims should be ignore and that the will of Allah must be followed regardless.

    "
    Quote
Hijab is a definite obligation for every Muslim woman. Deficiency in calcium and vitamin D is something that can be treated medically and by eating food that contains those nutrients, and by exposure to the sun in a place where there are no non-mahram men, such as exposure to the sun through windows, on the roof of the house, in remote parks, and so on.

Allah, may He be exalted, has prescribed and enjoined hijab, and He knows best about His creation and what is best for them. Sharee‘ah does not enjoin anything that causes obvious harm or considerable problems.

Following a medical study in which a number of doctors took part, Dr. Muhammad al-Shaakir (consultant in bone disease at the specialist King Faisal Hospital in Riyadh) rejected what has been said about women’s Islamic clothing playing a part in vitamin D deficiency and said: This theory has no connection to truth.

Specialists think that one of the means of protection against bone disease is exposure to the sun so as to enable the skin to produce vitamin D. The Muslim woman’s hijab does not prevent her being exposed to the rays of the sun, because minimal daily exposure is enough to produce sufficient amounts of this vitamin.

End quote from the [Saudi] Ministry of Health website.

    http://www.moh.gov.sa/des/sections.php?CatParent=13&CatID=42

It should be said to women who do not wear hijab for this reason: Fear Allah, may He be exalted, and beware of His Punishment; adhere to that which He has enjoined upon you, and stop making false excuses, for nothing is hidden from Allah; Allaah knows the fraud of the eyes, and all that the hearts conceal (cf. Ghaafir 40:19). Seek remedies and treatments in that which Allah has not forbidden, and you will find it, in sha Allah.

May Allah help us all to do that which He loves and which pleases Him.

    And Allah knows best.

Is this something that is not discussed very often? I find surprisiung that whenever something that is Islamic and potentially harmful or unhealthy, the common response is well Allah knows best??? Does Allah not know how to keep his own creations healthy? Oh right, too busy writing his name in eggs and leaves.

I already knew about this, however that is the most fucking stupid, half-assed, and uncaring response ever.

Treatment involves Vitamin D and calcium supplements and a fair amount of other dietary changes. Usually in conjunction with exposure to sunlight as it's the most effective way.

    3) in remote parks

    1) Windows filter a vast amount of UV light. UV light helps skincells convert Vitamin D. So that's useless advice.
Not to mention that even if this wasn't an issue, are you really going to be sat on a window sill for a few hours a day where men outside might see you god forbid?!
    2) Who the fuck has access to the roof of their house in Western countries?!
    3) Where the hell do those exist?!

Thanks for the pointless and impractical suggestions. I wont forget this gem either:

Of course none of this fucking helps when you have lifelong abnormalities caused by your stupid, illogical and incredibly harmful beliefs.

Darker people are more likely to suffer from this as they need more exposure to sunlight. How sad.

I mean there are obvious remedies like try to take in more vitamin D through other means. But I mean come'on.

Natural sunlight, versus, taking man-made medicine like they are suggesting.
Our skins were made to in-take sunlight for easy vitamin D in case we could not get access to other means. it just pisses me off that the man made clothing that's precedence over nature, in the name of God which apparently created nature in the first place. It just boogles my mind.

The irony is that my parents sent me an email about this issue ages ago - that's how I first heard about it. I think it was a Saudi article, so it talked more specifically about Saudi women & women who wear the burka. As if where we come from is a more sensible type of Islam since women only wear hijab, so their face, hands, and maybe some of their arms are exposed to the sunlight so that will be good enough.  wacko

Rather be forgotten than remembered for giving in.

I removed my hijab last May and was able to spend the majority of 2012's summer outdoors, camping, swimming, etc.  While wearing hijab (for 17 years straight) my Vit D levels only peaked at around 35 (they should be close to 100 mind you).  During the last year of my hijab wearing days, I was popping 10,000 i.u's of D per day....to no avail....still couldn't get my levels up and generally felt like shit most days, mentally and physically despite being committed to intense workouts, health, fitness, etc.

The summer of 2012 was a full summer spent without my hijab (and other copious layers of unnecessary clothing)...I spent most of it out in nature, IN THE SUNSHINE, hiking, swimming, camping, etc.  Not only did my D levels finally shoot up, but so did my energy and mental stamina.  TO say it was like the difference between night day would not even COME CLOSE to describing the difference I felt!

I curse all those years I spent under-nourished by the sunlight, feeling like utter crap and not having a clue as to why.  It is dangerous for women not to get sunlight on their skin.  Wonder how many Muslim women have developed autoimmune disorders such as MS and the like, who live in the northern latitudes.  supplements only go SO FAR.  Humans are very much like plants....we NEED the sunshine.....or else we wither and deteriorate in a multitude of ways.

Do not go gentle into that good night.

I'm a cave geek and even my nerdy ass gets enough sunlight to keep my vitamin D levels up.

What kind of shit was Allah smoking when he came up with this? Back in the 700's there was no such thing as supplements.

Why would you make whores healthier than good women?

I wonder if there is a study on hair loss and hijab? I saw a forum about this, and apparently many hijabis experience hair loss. So guess what the solution is? Take it off? Not a chance. There's a special shampoo made for hijabis with thinning hair.

It's ok though guys, give up all your health and happiness in this life, because your reward is in the next life >_<

I just realised something..a lot of older Muslims need those walking aids:

I saw that walker thing ^ all over the mid east, and with Muslims in the west, and I can't remember seeing it used by older non Muslims. Just wondering if it is linked to rickets/vit D deficiency.

What is happening to the Muslim female population's ability to think?

What is happening to the Muslim female population's ability to think?

The following Hadith summarizes all that a Muslim woman is supposed to aspire to becoming in life. Nothing else is important in the Islamic view:

"If a woman prays her five (daily prayers), fasts her month (i.e. Ramadan), guards her private parts, and obeys her husband, it will be said to her, 'Enter Paradise through whichever of the gates of Paradise you wish.'" [Sahih Al-Bukhari]

So the taliban are only following god's law, and girls going to school is unislamic.

I think we should state that clearly.

part of the reason people choose religion is that it does the thinking for them.  let's face it, life is confusing and challenging, sometimes giving in and letting "God" do the thinking for you can be an attractive alternative

men are no less immune from this "non-thinking" problem than women...

Light Exposure During Pregnancy Key to Normal Eye Development
Jan. 16, 2013 — New research in Nature concludes the eye -- which depends on light to see -- also needs light to develop normally during pregnancy.
    Share This:

Scientists say the unexpected finding offers a new basic understanding of fetal eye development and ocular diseases caused by vascular disorders -- in particular one called retinopathy of prematurity that can blind premature infants. The research, led by scientists at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), appears online Jan. 16 ahead of print publication.
"This fundamentally changes our understanding of how the retina develops," says study co-author Richard Lang, PhD, a researcher in the Division of Pediatric Ophthalmology at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. "We have identified a light-response pathway that controls the number of retinal neurons. This has downstream effects on developing vasculature in the eye and is important because several major eye diseases are vascular diseases."

But the sunscreen blocks UV light required for Vitamin D. Gap in the market for more breathable/comfortable (UV friendly or not/)but only in black/blue. Had a look at statistics, basically no rickets in Europe, US and Australia on the flip side very little skin cancer in brown/black average muslim country, infact out of the top 50 only notables are Jamaica and some Far East. Top ten countries all european, number 11 spot taken by israel, proof indeed that the European jews had no claim over palestine.

Rickets prevalent in South America and one or two middle easter countries. Studies in Qatar - did not report a gender imbalance as to the casualties. maybe they didn't look for them?

People with darker skin tones require more exposure to sunlight than light skinned people do, this in addition to people avoiding the sun more and weight problems contribute to a higher incidence of vitamin D deficiencies in South America.
The study should have included this information as to why a certain group were excluded from it's findings.

Either way women who are required to cover up every inch of skin for the sake of religion are being put in danger of serious medical conditions that are easily preventable.

It never ceases to amaze me that the religions of the world who claim that humans are gods creation made in his image somehow cannot accept it and seek to change the human body or attempt to improve upon what the creator gave them.

This has always been a sticking point for me in Christianity because if god truly was the Alpha and Omega, the powerful omnipotent and perfect creator of the universe then how could have so epically fucked up his own creations damning them to death, disease and imperfection?

Women are the only exploited group in history to have been idealized into powerlessness.

There are so many variables here it is dangerous to come to such conclusions, for example does everyone have equal access to competent diagnostic services for skin cancer,

And what do you mean no claims?  Jews have been moving elsewhere voluntarily and forced for two and a half thousand years, including very significant populations until recently in Egypt, Iran, Iraq,,,

There is chance of getting cancer only if you lie on the beach and bake yourself for hours while wearing next to nothing. Dressing normally with your arms and legs exposed and soaking in few minutes of sunlight will not do any harm, but will do lot of good and will get enough amount of vitamin D.

I was just wumming. Bit of a stretch to deny statehood on frequency of skin cancer.  If israeli's had no case for living palestine because they suffer from skin cancer then nor do any europeans to their lands because they also suffer from skin cancer more. I was taking the angle that if palestinians don't suffer from skin cancer living in the same locale than perhaps Israeli's, perhaps israeli's were not 'made' to live their, especially the european ones - though I am not sure how different they are to the middle-eastern ones.
