Tens of thousands protest anti-Islam film in Nigeria says news

Protesters shout death to America, death to Israel and death to enemies of Islam

    Quote
KANO: Tens of thousands of people on Saturday protested on the streets of Nigeria’s second city of Kano against an anti-Islam film made in the US that has stirred outrage across the Muslim world. The crowd of demonstrators stretched several kilometres (miles) through the city, the largest in Nigeria’s mainly Muslim north, with protesters shouting “death to America, death to Israel and death to the enemies of Islam”.

The rally was organised by the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, which has operated in Africa’s most populous country since the late 1970s. “We are out today to express our rage and disapproval over this blasphemous film,” said Muhammed Turi, a protest leader and member of the Islamic Movement. “This protest is also aimed at calling on the US government to put a halt to further blasphemy against Islam,” he added.

Demonstrators carried pictures of US President Barack Obama, as well as American and Israeli flags as they marched towards a palace owned by the Emir of Kano, the top religious figure in the city of roughly 4.5 million people. Others were seen waving Iranian flags.

Turi addressed the crowd outside Kano’s central mosque, adjacent to the Emir’s palace, before the rally ended with no incidents of violence reported. “We are pained by this deliberate insult against our religion under the pretext of freedom of expression,” he told the protesters.............

I suspect that in part, the reason for the violent rampaging protests could be because some Muslims are bothered that there hasn't been an earthquake or some other apparently divine punishment for this youtube video. So their insecure faith feels a need for there to be some kind of "big" response, and they'll create one themselves rather than see nothing happen and worry that there is no Allah to inflicte a wrathful punishment.

^ Really? I always had it explained to me when I was younger that the reason for non–divine punishments was that it had been foretold that people would turn against Islam in the run–up to Judgment Day.

Interesting, I don't know how widely known that explanation is among the rampagers or whether it deep down satisfies their doubts. This (just a very speculative thought) occured to me because someone posted about Muslims spreading a wishful thinking meme about an earthquake destroying an American cinema which was supposedly about to show the Muhammad film (it was actually a photo from the Chile earthquake 2 yrs ago).

Protesters at U.S. consulate in Toronto demand government action against anti-Islamic movie

Zafar Bangash stepped off his makeshift stage across the street from the U.S. consulate Saturday to hugs and kisses from his Muslim brothers.

Bangash, director of the Institute of Contemporary Islamic Thought in Toronto, led a crowd of roughly 1,500 in chants against the anti-Islamic film, Innocence of Muslims.

“The Muslims, united, will never be defeated,” yelled Bangash, the crowd following suit. “Shame, shame, U.S.A. Shame, shame, U.S.A.”

Bangash, the organizer of the protest, told the crowd to rise up against the inaction of the U.S., and the Canadian government as well.

“Harper, Harper, shame on you,” said Bangash, the crowd of men, women and children roaring his words back at him.

“Islamophobia has now become the official policy of the U.S. and Canadian governments,” Bangash said once offstage. He said that neither government has taken enough action against the film.

“Not a single Canadian politician has uttered a single word about this scandalous and filthy movie,” said Bangash, adding the statement issued by the U.S. government is not enough.

You know I disliked that stupid film for many reasons. Plus, the vulgarisms of many depictions of Muhammad don't appeal to me. There is plenty to discuss about him already - the best thing to do is be specific. That's not to say there isn't a place for that kind of thing. Just that I'd rather really be accurate and debunk Muhammad by his own actions and sunnah.

But people like this Zafar Bangash just make me want to lift my middle finger right into his face and then draw a really vulgar cartoon of the prophet just to set fire to his tail.

Also way to steal the "el pueblo, unido, jamás será vencido" chant, except it rhymes in Spanish, and is catchy.

There are actually quite a lot of Salafis in Canada. I wouldn't be surprised if they start acting up any day now. They already have ghettoized themselves in certain areas and there are, every so often, news stories about honour killings, and about general dawahganda politics giving rise to certain exceptionalisms for Muslims, like prayer times separating girls and boys in some of Ontario's public schools, certain public universities mandating "modest" clothing in their student gyms, etc. I say to these types, BRING IT ON MOFOS. There are as many liberal, secular Muslims, and then there is ME and the people in my network that they'll have to contend with. Canada is a nice place until you really piss us off.

Prophet film protesters clash with Greek police

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Greek riot police used tear gas and pepper spray to disperse Muslim protesters who clashed with officers Sunday during a rally against a film produced in the U.S. that denigrates Islam's Prophet Muhammad. No injuries were reported.

A general strike in Bangladesh shut down schools, transportation and businesses, while a few hundred people peacefully marched in Pakistan. Iranian students burned flags in Tehran to protest the recent publication of lewd caricatures of Muhammad by a French satirical weekly.

In Athens, six people were detained during the demonstration at a central square, police said. About 600 people attended the rally, which featured heated speeches, but was mostly peaceful.

The crowd then wanted to march to the U.S. Embassy, which is about three kilometers (two miles) away from Omonia Square. Some tried to break through police lines several times, but riot officers pushed them back.

The violence occurred at the end of the rally, when small groups of protesters threw objects at police. Three cars were damaged and three storefronts smashed.

Banners were displayed in English, denouncing the film and called on the U.S. to hang the filmmaker. One told President Barack Obama "we are all with Osama," referring to Osama bin Laden, the al-Qaida leader who was killed in a U.S. raid in Pakistan in May 2011.

    Question:

What does these protesting really do for the Muslims? Because someone can just go make another movie right now too. So what is the point of going nuts and protesting in their country? Not like they are actually stopping anything

Protesting isn't too bad. It's a first amendment right in my mind. It's fine to show your love for Muhammad if you want, it's the hysteria and craziness that makes people look stupid.

I just think it's funny because it shows a profound lack of understanding of how the US freedom of speech works, and it's ironic that some of these calls for government supervision of speech would come from just liberated countries who spent decades having their own speech oppressed.

Other than that I get the whole "the film is the last straw for a colonized people, so they want to riot" thing

State Department condemns CNN for reporting contents of dead ambassador’s diary says RT News

    Quote
Days after US Ambassador Christopher Stevens died in a Sept. 11 attack in Libya, CNN found his personal journal at the scene of the attack. After promising Stevens’ family not to report on the contents of the journal, the news channel has covered it. State Department spokesperson, Philippe Reines, announced Saturday that the CNN had reported on the personal journal despite objections from Stevens’ family, calling the media outlet’s actions “indefensible.”

Reines said that in a phone call with the family of the slain ambassador, CNN “agreed to abide by the clear wishes of the Stevens family, and pledged not to use the diary or even allude to its existence until hearing back from the family.” But as the family had not yet made a decision regarding CNN’s use of the diary after four days, the channel appears to have grown impatient and used the information anyway.

    Quote
Four days later “was as long as CNN could control themselves, so they just went ahead and used it,” Reines said. “Entirely because they felt like it.”

CNN’s Anderson Cooper first mentioned the diary Friday, after previous reports expressed Stevens’ fears that he was on an al-Qaeda hit list. While on-air, Cooper said some of the information relayed by the channel was based on the personal journal, which CNN had come across in its reporting in Benghazi. Cooper said he reported some of the information that he found newsworthy.

“There were issues raised in the journal which required full reporting,” CNN.com wrote on its website. But Reines did not believe newsworthiness a good enough excuse for breaching the promise made to the ambassador’s family. “Anderson Cooper didn’t even bother to offer any other explanation as to why the network broke its promise to the family,” Reines said.

On Saturday, CNN.com published an article defending its actions. The channel wrote that it took snippets from the ambassador’s diary and corroborated them with other sources, thereby not publishing information based solely on the journal. The late Ambassador Stevens had expressed worry about security threats in Benghazi, as well as a rise in Islamic extremism, the article wrote.

    ................................

“Whose first instinct is it to remove from a crime scene the diary of a man killed along with three other Americans serving our country, read it, transcribe it, email it around your newsroom for others to read, and then call the family?” Reines asked.

The journal included seven handwritten pages, including passages expressing Stevens’ concern that he was on a “hit list.”

    ......................

But Reines says the actions are “not a proud moment in CNN’s history.”  ..

If that is true,  then there is a serious problem of negligence on the part US govt in  protecting their Ambassadors in places like Libya.
