Exorcism in the east end of London

    ++++++

A woman was whipped with a walking stick during a brutal exorcism organised by members of her own family, a court heard.

Asma Hussain was also said to have been tied to a bed and covered with holy water after relatives became convinced she was possessed by a demon.

Her husband Ahmed, 60, summoned the local Muslim preacher to carry out the ceremony and encouraged him to hit his wife harder, Snaresbrook crown court heard.

Mrs Hussain’s back was described as “one massive bruise” and she also suffered injuries to her face and hands.

Ahmed Hussain, his son Mohammed, 28, daughter Salma, 22, daughter-in-law Halima Khatun, 28, and son-in-law Mohammed Azia, 21, are all on trial accused of false

imprisonment and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. They are said to have believed “black magic” had been cast on their victim.

“It appears that members of Asma Hussain’s family believed that she was possessed by demons,” said prosecutor Babatunde Alabi.

“As a result of this belief, it is alleged they kept her captive in her own home, tying her to a bed in the living room. They also arranged for an imam to carry out an exorcism on her.

“During the course of the exorcism, she was held down, had water poured all over her and was beaten with a cane.”

The exorcism, at the family home in Bethnal Green, is said to have been instigated by Ahmed Hussain last January. The attack continued into the early hours of the morning, the court heard.

The previous day, Ahmed and son Mohammed are said to have brought the imam to the home of another daughter, Shahana, where Asma had stayed overnight, telling her someone had put “black magic” on her mother.

On the day of the exorcism, Shahana Hussain became concerned after visiting her mother to find a relative removing a tie from her leg, the jury heard.

She had a bruised face and was crying. Shahana later called police who arrived with paramedics, to be allegedly told by Mohammed Hussain his mother was possessed and needed an exorcism.

“When Asma’s top was lifted up, it was discovered her back was one massive bruise,” said the prosecutor.

Ahmed Hussain, of  Poplar, Mohammed Hussain, of Aldgate, Salma Hussain, Azia, and Khatun, all of Shadwell, all plead not guilty.

    The trial continues.

I'd like to know what made them think she had become possessed. Sometimes asserting your independence, or even questioning religion, gets interpreted as being caused by a djinn or a possession.

The other possibility is that she could have been experiencing depression or genuine mental health problems that altered her behaviour, and they interpreted that as being caused by a djinn.

    So sad -.-

This reminds me of my mother. Everything is caused by jinn to her.

It could be depression yeah. When I was 17 I used to wake up crying every morning. Crying without a reason. Mum thought I was possessed but I was just a depressed teenager.

On that story of FOOLISH PEOPLE WITH STUPID BELIEFS AND BRUTAL RITUALS .. here is the better link with pictures of fools

    Quote
The previous day, Ahmed and Mohammed Hussain are said to have brought the imam to the home of another daughter, Shahana Hussain, where Asma had stayed overnight, telling her someone had put ‘black magic’ on her. They went into a room and the imam prayed before dousing Mrs Hussain in water.

    Quote
Shahana Hussain refused their request for more water and they left. On the day of the exorcism, Shahana Hussain became concerned after visiting her mother to find a relative removing a tie from her leg, it was said. She had bruising on her face and was crying and appeared to be distressed. Shahana later called police who attended the property with paramedics, to be told by Mohammed Hussain that his mother was possessed and in need of an exorcism, the court heard.

Khatun also told them her mother-in-law was possessed, it is claimed.

‘When the ambulance crew arrived, they wanted to take Asma to hospital,’ Mr Alabi said.

‘However, Ahmed Hussain said she was not going. Asma Hussain followed what he said and the other defendants supported this.

‘The family kept pouring water over her, claiming it was holy water.

‘All of a sudden, Asma rushed out of the room and went straight to the ambulance.

‘In the ambulance, a full assessment was carried out. When Asma’s top was lifted up, it was discovered her back was one massive bruise.’ During police interviews, Halima Khatun claimed her mother-in-law was possessed and said she knew water had been thrown at her, but insisted she was unaware anyone had beaten her. Salma Hussain told police she was present when her mother was hit by the imam but denied any involvement. She later refuted taking any part in the assaults on Mrs Hussain. Mohammed Kayes Hussain and Mohammed Aziz also both denied any involvement in the assault.

Ahmed Hussain claimed he was held captive by his son, Mohammed Kayes, and was unaware of what was going on as he had been ‘given something to drink’. He denied instigating the offences. Ahmed Hussain, of Poplar, east London; Mohammed Kayes Hussain, of Aldgate, east London; Salma Hussain, of Shadwell, east London; Aziz, of the same address, and Khatun, of the same address, all deny assault occasioning actual bodily harm and false imprisonment.

    The trial continues.

Lucky the lady had at least one daughter Shahana Hussain to help her out., other wise  her life would have ended in a  lock up in a closed room without any one hearing a word until her death...

Has an exorcism done good, like ever?

So once again I'm left with the classic Irish man's dilemma, do I eat the potato or do I let it ferment so I can drink it later?

Family sentenced in Birmingham for killing six months pregnant daughter-in-law trying to exorcise her of a djinn

    +++++

A man who murdered his pregnant wife has been jailed for life, along with three other family members.

Mohammed Mumtaz, 25, from Birmingham, had claimed Naila Mumtaz, 21, tried to strangle herself at home in 2009.

Mumtaz, his parents Zia Ul-Haq and Salma Aslam, both 51, and brother-in-law Hammad Hassan, 24, were all found guilty after a trial earlier this year.

Birmingham Crown Court heard Mrs Mumtaz's in-laws thought she was possessed by evil spirits.

The trial heard evidence that Mrs Mumtaz was killed during attempts to render her unconscious as family members attempted to drive out a harmful "djinn" spirit.

    Found by paramedics
Mrs Mumtaz, who was pronounced dead in hospital, was six months pregnant and had moved to the UK in 2008 after an arranged marriage in Pakistan.

Her body was found by paramedics in a bedroom at the family home after they were called to the property in the early hours of 8 July 2009.

Sentencing the four members of the family, all of Craythorne Avenue, Handsworth Wood, the judge at Birmingham Crown Court told them they had "betrayed" Mrs Mumtaz.

She was her parents' only daughter and her death has left a terrible gap in their lives”

    Judge Mr Justice Keith
Mumtaz, who had to be helped out of the dock by his father, was jailed for a minimum of 13 years.

His brother-in-law, Hammad Hussan, was also imprisoned for at least 13 years.

Zia Ul-Haq and Salma Aslam were told they would each serve a minimum of 15 years.

Possible motives for the offence raised during the trial were that the defendants believed Naila's unborn child was not her husband's - or that she was possessed by a jinn sent from Pakistan.

The judge, Mr Justice Keith, said it was unlikely the defendants believed Naila was pregnant by another man.

He said: "The other possibility explored in the course of the trial about why Naila was smothered was that the defendants believed that Naila had been possessed by a djinn, which had been sent from Pakistan by Naila's parents, and that they ... smothered her in order to get rid of the djinn.

Mumtaz, Ul-Haq, Hassan and Aslam (clockwise from top left) were all jailed for life
"I regard this as a less unlikely explanation for what happened."

Jurors were told that numerous telephone calls were made to Naila's relatives in Pakistan, the emergency services and other individuals in the hours before she was taken to hospital.

During the calls, it was alleged Ul-Haq claimed that a spirit had been sent from Pakistan, while a female at the house was allegedly heard to say "don't call an ambulance yet - we will cure her ourselves".

In his account to police, Mumtaz maintained that injuries to his wife's body were self-inflicted and claimed that a person was present at the house praying "to get the spirit out of her".

During his sentencing remarks, the judge said: "She was her parents' only daughter and her death has left a terrible gap in their lives.

"What aggravates the case is that Naila was pregnant at the time of her death, isolated from her family in a country unfamiliar to her and spoke little if any English."

Mumtaz, his parents, and Hassan had denied both murder and manslaughter.

The judge urged the prison authorities to house Mumtaz, who suffers from a severe disability, in the same cell as his father so he can be properly supported during his imprisonment.

The family shared a house in Handsworth Wood, Birmingham
Mrs Mumtaz's relatives issued a statement through West Midlands Police which read: "Naila was a happy, confident and beautiful young woman.

"She came to Britain to be with her husband; we entrusted our most treasured, beloved only daughter to him and his family.

"Naila was almost six months pregnant with her unborn son when she was killed in her home destroying her hopes, dreams and opportunities for the future.

"We are very grateful for the jury using plain common sense in bringing the perpetrators to justice.

"Naila will always be in our hearts and prayers and we hope her memory will live on by bringing about awareness of the issues surrounding her unfortunate death."

Det Insp Simon Astle said: "This was a tragic and deeply upsetting case, where a young woman had her life so horrifically ended by those she loved and trusted.

"Naila was a pretty, outgoing young woman who was soon to become a mother for the first time.

"It is unthinkable that those who she was closest to would take her life in the belief that she had been possessed by evil spirits.

"Naila should now be enjoying the joys of motherhood and family life but instead her family back in Pakistan continue to mourn her death, still shocked and unbelieving that the family she entered into caused her death."

I don't care what anybody else says. The family belongs in a mental hospital. Who knows what other harm they could cause due to their superstitious beliefs.

Their religious beliefs have reached the point of insanity and are not different than any other psychological illness. Plain and simple

In my opinion a life without curiosity is not a life worth living

Exactly. In most cases the 'cure' puts the individual in a worse initial position (if they genuinely had some sort of mental issues).
