  • Church of England says no to female bishops

    Quote
LONDON (AP) — The Church of England's governing body blocked a move Tuesday to permit women to serve as bishops in a vote so close it failed to settle the question of female leadership and likely condemned the institution to years more debate on the issue.

The General Synod's daylong debate ended with the rejection of a compromise that was intended to unify the faithful despite differing views on whether women should be allowed in the hierarchy. But backers failed to gain the necessary majority by six votes.

"There is no victory in the coming days," said Rev. Angus MacLeay. "It is a train crash."

The defeat was a setback for Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, who retires at the end of December, and his successor, Bishop Justin Welby. Both had strongly endorsed a proposed compromise that would have respected the decision of those who objected to the ordination of women bishops.

No females? Ok, but then you get no automatic place in the House of Lords!

They'll vote for female bishops eventually. The Church of England is almost as liberal as organised Abrahamic religion can be. They do introspect. I wish Islam was like the Church of England.

This is awesome news. Will increase pressure to separate church and state in this country, rather than give these privileged morons something to point to as sign of the church gettin' all hip and keeping up with the times. Pretty hilarious too that it was the house of laity that blocked the vote.

Why do women (at all) believe in any of the Abrahamic religions? That is a great mystery if you ask me.

The best way to imprison someone is to make them think it is for their own good.
Also, religions (especially misogynistic ones) are quite good at lowering people's self esteem and making them feel worthless. But they are always reminded of how great religion is and how much they need it. Turns into a vicious cycle, like being with an abusive, manipulative partner.

That's the only explanation I can think of. It baffles me too.

Why do men believe in them ? I don't mean “hide behind them to justify their mischief”, I mean those that actually do believe in them. That's an equally great mystery if you ask me.
