  • Advice: New Portable Audio, Headphones, Turntable Mixer and External HDD
     OP - December 19, 2012, 03:13 PM

Thought I'd try to utilise the tech knowledge here:

I'm planning on buying the following over the next few months. All and any advice, recommendations, warnings, etc. much appreciated:

New Portable Audio - Not Apple. All other suggestions welcome. Sound quality is factor I'm interested in. Don't care if it looks like a turd.

Headphones - My AudioTechnicas have been brilliant but worn out over the past 5 or so years. Most probably going to replace with a pair of HD25s but am open to other suggestions (http://www.catapult.co.uk/products/dj-equipment/headphones/8/sennheiser-hd-25-1ii-dual-band-headphone-15m-cable-right-angle-jack.html)

Turntable Mixer - Max £100 new or very good condition second hand.

External HDD - 500GB+, max £60. Unsure as to whether I want USB or mains powered. Again, open to suggestions.

Re the external HDD - the Lacie Rugged range is worth a look, if only because they're significantly more resilient in day-to-day use than other drives.

I always found HD-25s pinched my ears after a while, no matter how much I loosened them (no matter which model). Can't say I can recommend an alternative, though.

Headphones: Hmm, I've heard elsewhere that the 25's can be a tad tight on the old bonce. Will try to find a friend with a pair to give them a try for a while. The pair I've got at the moment have got an awesome long coiled cable so can walk quite a long way from mixer/computer/whatever they're plugged into without having to take them off.

Audio: For the MP3, I'm fairly sure I'm going to get the Sony NWzA845 http://www.computeractive.co.uk/ca/review/2068584/sony-walkman-nwz-a845-portable-music-video-player. I had an older version of this before and loved it. Sadly, after 6 years the screen's gone all floopy.

Harddrive: Is there any advantage to having a mains powered external HDD versus a USB powered one?

If anyone sees any good looking deals on external HDDs (of any type) or MP3 players or mixers, give us a shout will ya?

Not really. For mobile use, the odds of being able to plug a HDD into the mains but leaving a laptop to run off a battery sounds, well, a little silly. For desktop use, it's just another set of cables to dangle behind a desk that you could probably live without.
