  • Coursera - free online courses
     OP - January 05, 2013, 05:22 PM

An educational resource that is completely free. All you need is a decent internet connection.

The online community offers courses in a wide range of topics, spanning the Humanities, Medicine, Biology, Social Sciences, Mathematics, Business, Computer Science etc.
It is a collaboration of several universities - https://www.coursera.org/universities

The lectures are presented as online videos. There might be some coursework involved and tests or exams, but they are not compulsory. There is a discussion forum that you can use to interact and swap ideas with fellow students.

I've signed up for the "Introduction to Genetics and Evolution" course. Will let you know how I get on  Tongue

    I love Coursera.

My mind runs, I can never catch it even if I get a head start.

Although I don't really do online courses now, when I was a bit younger, I took Introductory Physics (Physics I, II, III) with MIT OpenCourseWare. From experience, I can say it was excellent. Walter Lewin is a God; nobody teaches Physics like him. They have courses in many fields.

There is also edX. I haven't used Coursera so I don't know how good it is, but I'm sure it's up to standard.

It was quite a good experience. I have done a few courses on genetics, astronomy and human history etc that was very interesting and a great learning experience. I wasn't really taking them to move into a new field or qualification so I can't comment on what that aspect is like. It was just to learn more about subjects that are different from my line of work  Smiley

You have to pay for the qualification and it's not a lot.
Just checked the website, I didn't know they had 681 courses!
It's time to use my brain.  yes

There are plenty of exciting things to learn! What are you into InC?

There are some courses I am interested in, but start at a bad time for me.  Like the introduction to philosophy course, which I wouldn't mind trying out.

It starts in September, which is when my 3rd and final year of uni starts too.  I don't know if I want to spread myself that thin (I really do a hefty amount of research for all my papers), what with homework with the kids, all the regular real life stuff, plus the year that makes or breaks my final uni results.

If I can find one that I like for over the summer, then I am signing up, since I'm only doing pre-reading for my modules, meaning I will have time.

Thanks for the link though, I have no doubt everytime I have spare time now, I will be filling it more productively than staring at a wall, or refreshing CEMB and FB.  Grin

Inhale the good shit, exhale the bullshit.

Ya there are a lot of courses, now I dont know where to start from!
I might start with chemistry. Lol
Basically, I want to study subjects I have from little to no knowledge.   Tongue

@Descent  Im really into psychology, that's gonna be my main path. But I also like other subjects like chemistry, philosophy, biology etc...
    Also computer programming seems interesting.
Arghh where do I start from?!  Cheesy

Psychology was fun when I used to study it, I particularly enjoyed cognitive psychology.

AntiCitizenX has a great short series on YouTube regarding the Psychology of Belief, it's definitely worth watching imo.

If your internet connection is reasonably good, you could sign up for the course and then download the video lectures, and watch them in your spare time or later in the year when you are less busy. You will miss out on doing the exercises and mini exams, or interacting with other students on their forum, but I guess that's no big deal if you are just curious about the subject. That's what I did for one of the history courses because I couldn't keep up. Every now and again, I'll watch a lecture if I've got some time to spare.
Also most of the courses will repeat at some point, so even if you miss out on it this time, there will be another  Smiley

If you're into Biology and Chemistry, you could always take an introductory course of Biochemistry or Chemical Biology. Disciplines that involve multiple fields are always interesting. Also, you can study a multi-field discipline involving Psychology, like behavioural neuroscience.

For computer programming, you can learn the various languages like Python, or C.

So, a quick search on Coursera lead me to these somewhat related courses:

I've checked those courses, some are already running and others are coming soon.
The neurobiology one is already in its last week, I'll have to wait for a future session, damn! That was the most interesting.
    I'll check the others  Smiley

    Neurobiology is fascinating.

`But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.
`Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: `we're all mad here. I'm mad.  You're mad.'
`How do you know I'm mad?' said Alice.
`You must be,' said the Cat, `or you wouldn't have come here.'

If you're just interested in self-learning, and not in receiving any certificates, MIT OCW is the best. You watch lectures, read notes (and textbook if you buy it), and there are exams available for you to do.

Been a while so, i'm just gonna pop back up and post this! grin12 It's a highly recommended history course about humans. I started it about a year ago but couldn't see it through due to time constraint. I actually bought the book off amazon and it turned out to be in Jewish. It starts in three days for anyone whose interested Wink  Im actually unemployed now, so i can afford the time to check this out again!  dance

Check topics under my cemb profile. I have compiled two courses on probability. The intro course is named probability theory whilst the advanced one is sets, counting and probability.

My mind runs, I can never catch it even if I get a head start.
