Long history of extremism on campus, Islamists preaching far-right shit, intimidating non Muslims, saying ex-Muslims should be killed. University demands that all sermons are submitted to them first, Muslim soc refuses, claims discrimination when the prayer room is shut down, claims they are being 'unjustly targeted'

City University London removes Muslim Friday prayer room

City University in London has been accused of discrimination by a group of Muslim students after it closed a dedicated room used for Friday prayers.

A group of students have formed Muslim Voices on Campus, calling on the university to reverse its decision.

The group said it was being "unjustly targeted".

City said it acted because students had refused to submit the proposed content of sermons to the university before prayers to check its "appropriateness".

Wasif Sheikh, who leads the group, said: "We feel we are being unjustly targeted. All of our sermons are open, we welcome all students and all staff.

"But when you start submitting your sermons to be monitored and scrutinized then there's a chance for it to be dictated what's allowed and what's not allowed. We, as students, don't accept that."

    Confrontational atmosphere

Three years ago, the counter extremism think tank the Quilliam Foundation released a report on the sermons at Friday prayers at City University, in central London.

It claimed hard line views and a confrontational atmosphere were being encouraged.

In one sermon, which was recorded, the speaker said: "The Islamic state teaches to cut the hand of the thief. Yes it does. And it also teaches us to stone the adulterer.

"When they tell us that, the Islamic state tells us and teaches us to kill the apostate, yes it does."

BBC London has seen no evidence those views are still being spread now, but some argue the episode shows the need for greater scrutiny.

    'Vicious history'

Dr Usama Hasan from the Quilliam Foundation said: "If there was no past history at the university, I think what the students are saying would sound extremely reasonable. However, there has been quite a vicious and nasty history there.

"They have to deal with that and give a bit more to the university.

The university could not continue to condone an activity taking place on its premises where it cannot exercise reasonable supervision”

"Both sides need to compromise here and negotiate with some difficult conversations."

The challenge faced by many universities is how to deal with a potential threat - without being seen to restrict freedom of speech.

A statement from the university said it needed to be sure of the "appropriateness" of what was being discussed in sermons as authorized university events.

It said it also needed to be assured that all "students eligible to deliver" prayers and sermons "are considered equally and given the opportunity to do so".

The statement went on: "The university could not continue to condone an activity taking place on its premises where it cannot exercise reasonable supervision."

In addition, the university said it had suggested a number of alternative places for students to pray nearby.

The right of people such as homosexuals and others to feel safe and welcome on Campus is very important.

As long as they don't spread bigotry the monitoring of their sermons wouldn't affect them in any way.

They are just proving that they have something to hide.

The University of Oslo is meeting similar challenges. A group conservative, proselytizing Islamic preachers want to tie a knot with the University by establishing a student organization called Islam Net. This would allow them to use the facilities of the University to arrange activities, seminars etc. They preach Sharia-law, religious segregation and gender-segregation in public institutions (like the University) etc.

I can't imagine how life at campus would look like with these bullies and thugs walking around. No, no, no.

Believe those who are seeking the truth. Doubt those who find it.

i think this is what the the muslims will be most scared of- the congregation being compelled to have a variety of views heard on friday rather than just those of the conservative hardliners.

God forbid people should open their minds a little and start questioning.

I'vegot to stick with my free speech rights and say they shouldn't have to show their speeches beforehand, nor really should they be shut down, but they should be continously be shamed

. Piece of shit khatib isn't even from uni, he's been chased down by the media in the past for making extremist comments. Also, they used to intimidate the Shia guys that came to pray and mock them loudly while they prayed while we were in the women's side listening. FUCK YOU. I really thought about reporting the musallah but felt guilty about the good people that need it too.

Can't say I fee sorry for those guys. If you have nothing to hide, submit your dumb sermon!

I would agree with you if it were a completely public space (or indeed the Muslims' own private space). Given the fact that it is on campus and that there has been a history of extremism, I think the university is justified.

Society often gives religion more leeway than it does other groups with questionable agendas. If it were a neo-nazi group calling for the death of Jews, the banning of interracial marriage, and the arrest of whites who sympathize with minorities, there would be no debate about closing down their gathering all together.

Given that these people have openly called for the death of apostates (people like me) the stoning of fornicators, (heh, people like me again) and the execution of gays (ok, not me this time, but good friends of mine) I think that asking them to have their sermons reviewed in advance is more than reasonable.

I might agree with you. However the long history of extremism at this Uni meant gays, ex-Muslims and women were intimidated and had hate speech preached against them. Its not hard to see how the Uni considers it has a duty of care to all its students to keep their campus a place in which all students can feel safe and not be intimidated or have hate speech made on their property.

Anti-Muslim hate speech by any other society wouldn't be endorsed by the Uni. Why should this? They certainly seem to have cause for concern.

Anyway, this whole thing is a classic case of Islamist agitation and Islamic identity politics provocation.

I agree that the University doesn't have to subsidize hate speech. I think it would be a cleaner break if it was either you don't use university property for hate speech or don't use university property at all. This middle ground of "you can use university property but if we monitor you" makes the university look simultaneously weak and big brotherish.

If they shut down the Islamic society or MSA or whatever they would be accused of Islamophobia and have to deal with all that other bullcrap.

Im my opinion the uni should expel any student found to be "intimidating other students, or advocating violence and hate speech"

You don't necessarily have to shut down the student group just discipline the students inciting hatred.

For example my at my uni if anyone was found of hate speech against homosexuals or any other group they would likely get kicked out of the university and they explicitly warned us about this during orientation.

They should be shut down if the continuously knowingly bring in people who advocate hate speech. As long as it's well documented they can shove their islamopobia up their asses. I don't think a student should be expelled for advocating generic hate speech that can't be counted as directly intimidating. Bu

I have to say that our local MSA has hosted a TON of obnoxious jerks over the years and have acted many o times like the "angry hotheaded Muslims" that they DO NOT want to be labeled as.

Being Muslim and witnessing MUSLIMS (people of my own faith community) act like total idiots for so many years, I would actually love to see an MSA get shut down here or there if they get out of line....esp when it comes to their anti-Semitic bs.

Remember the Irvine 11?  I was actually a little tickled when they were arrested.

Sure, have your protests, have your gripes, voice your concerns.....but for the love of PETE, do it in an intelligent, well thought out and DIGNIFIED MANNER.
