    Well take comfort in the fact that the Oxford English dictionary has begun to share your pain. In that it has legitimised the phrase. That’s right folks – the ‘friend zone’ is officially a thing.

    The definition as detailed in the dictionary is as follows:
    noun
    informal
    a situation in which a platonic relationship exists between two people, one of whom has an undeclared romantic or sexual interest in the other:
    ex: I always wind up in the friend zone, watching them pursue other guys

    I don't see how Oxford Dicitonary picks its words. There's about 500,000 other slang words/phrases commonly used and it picks this one.

    Sounds like someone who works there is lonely whistling2

    In celebration, we shall start the CEMB friend zone club, where we all put each other in the friend zone. Huzzah.

    It seems that my point has eluded you. I shall expand upon it.

    The hypothetical person to get "friendzoned" by me in this forum has likely never seen me. They know very little about me aside from my internet persona. They don't know important IRL details like if I smell, do I like sushi, whats my favorite flavor of ice cream. Without these things I doubt that even the seeds of an infatuation can develop, let alone the "romantic or sexual interest" requisite the Oxford definition of the term friendzone.

    Flirting is not the same as expressing a romantic or sexual interest. This is because on the internet there is an incredible uncertainty related to communications, especially of the romantic sorts. For example, while some are comfortable dating online, others would balk at the very notion, considering it desperate or even unsafe (the latter maybe with good reason). Combine this with the fact that it is impossible to express vocal tone via internet text based communications, and it becomes very difficult to judge the intentions of any potentially romantic parties online.
