  • Mali Jews? I am confused
     OP - March 01, 2013, 11:48 AM

    Hey everyone,

I was watching TV at a friends house yesterday and I saw a short documentary about the war in Mali. The reporter was with the Muslims, the Muslims were wearing like Taliban outfits with green turbans. They showed some dead soldiers wearing camo uniforms, I am not sure whether they were French or Maleness (Mali people?). What baffled me was that the dead soldiers (black), where wearing these leather belts with little leather pouches with scrolls in them similar to those the Jews wear. Now I don't know whether these black soldiers are Jews or this is an African custom similar to the Jews to wear these I guess religious amulets.

    Anyone know?

I dont know about Mali specifically, but there are a few black african jewish tribes. It is relatively easy to prove that they have jewish ancestry because of matrilineal descent by which Judaism is said to descend, and Patrilineal descent in which jewish priesthood descends (you can trace mitochondrial DNA from the mother, and the Y chromosome from the father).
It means that there isnt that much confusion as to which genes come from where.
