     OP - March 18, 2013, 10:34 PM

Isn't it fucking marvelous how, as a society, we hold criminals and marginalized people—whether homeless or unemployed people, murderers, thieves, or drug addicts, etc.—personally responsible, but give exception to rapists? Think about it for a minute: we're willing to go against everything to believe in just to excuse the rapists. This is how much rape is ingrained in our culture.

Don't talk to me about how we don't need feminism or how men are equally as oppressed.

Fuck those guys. They should be thankful they only got one to two years in prison. If it were up to me, I would've had them castrated. Maybe they should've thought about putting their cocks where they don't belong if they didn't want to ruin their lives.

I can't even begin to guess what reason or motive CNN have for this outpouring of sympathy for these evil bastards. What's their angle? These are the guys from the self-proclaimed "Rape Crew" that were laughing and gloating about it on YouTube and posted photos of the rape that lasted several hours.

Too fucking busy, and vice versa.

It really is sickening to even attempt to garner sympathy for the rapists. They were fully aware of what they did, no matter how popular they are. They did get off lighter sentence but being branded sex offender publically will teach them the consequences of their action for the future.

I specifically remember a tweet mocking how she slept through a "wang in her butthole".

This story is so disgusting. When I was reading about American football worship and the reasons why this story was so hush-hush, I just wouldn't believe it.

One and two years? :/ That must be a joke....

Problems like these dampens my hope for the humanity to change for the better.Data and statistics of rape and constant reports of the courts resorting to victim blaming is frightening enough. Can't argue against that, Rape is a crime,a violent crime.

It's not gonna get better when news outlets are more interested in rape-apology propaganda rather than actually reporting the terrible crime that happened. If those reporters insist on injecting their opinion into news, then they should do the humane thing and condemn the crime and criminal and defend the victim. Or at least fucking mention her once.

So primitive attitudes towards rape and rape victims are not just found in non western countries? Who knew....

But seriously, the attitude by the CNN reporters is spinechilling

I'll take the unpopular opinion. I don't see the CNN anchors as rape apologists in the sense that you see at large. What I do see is a lack of perspective.  As a news program, they are going to go for the emotional angle. With two defendants on tape showing emotion vs. a ( rightly) anonymous rape victim, the station went for the emotion that it had and played it up.  That's one of the problems with modern media is it becomes a mindless emotional button pusher without taking a step back and thinking "what's the larger picture". Rightly they were called out on it.

So once again I'm left with the classic Irish man's dilemma, do I eat the potato or do I let it ferment so I can drink it later?

This is just sickening no I'm genuinely shocked at how sympathetic the media is to these two rapists. Are you kidding me? This blatant disregard for the victim and sympathy for the criminals has got to be one of the most disgusting, most bizarre things I've ever seen. Americans must REALLY love their footballers.

My heart goes out to the poor girl :( FSM knows how much harder it must be for her with all the shameless rape apologetics and victim blaming.

It's not that surprising though, the discourse that women are the ones to blame is far reaching, far too many people believe that sexually predatory behaviour is natural to a man, and women bring it out of them, and so excuses and sympathy continue to be given to men for following their 'natural' instincts.

As long as that belief continues to do it rounds regarding men, the rapist pity will continue.  banghead

It's a tragedy, I stopped watching mainstream news long ago, I really think people like that deserve like 5-10 in reality.

I must say, contrary to popular opinion here, I don't think this mode of thinking is mainstream at all, and it certainly isn't typically expressed in the media. This is the first time I've ever seen rapists' "futures" being mourned on mainstream media. There's a petition and a backlash for a reason.

Google reactions to Mike Tyson's rape conviction.  Google "reactions to athlete's rape convictions" or celebrity rape convictions, or college/university student's rape sympathy.

Just because it's the first time you have seen this sort of public mourning for the fall of some college stars future, doesn't mean it's the only time it happened.

It is way more common than you suspect.

far too many people believe that sexually predatory behaviour is natural to a man

If you look at the reproductive strategies of mammals... that might actually be true.
Forced sexual submission is quite common in nature.

So I doubt rape is a cultural artifact.

    I don't get it.

Are you saying that there is a scientific explanation that says that rape is certainly a cultural artifact BECAUSE science discourse has been historically biased towards male perspective?
Or are you saying that there is a scientific explanation that says that rape is certainly a cultural artifact IN SPITE of science discourse having been historically biased towards male perspective?

    Alright, I was (sorta) wrong.

The first page of results for "student rape sympathy" (and other similar searches) contained articles, blog posts, etc all related to the Steubenville case and this case and the media's reaction to it has gained worldwide attention, so I doubt it's typical for university students who rape to get sympathy.

You're right about athletes and celebrities though, but that has more to do with our culture's worship of the rich and famous (and their nutty fans who support them irrespective of whatever nasty shit they do) than a culture that routinely blames women for being raped. There's generally more sympathy for celebrities who commit crimes than there is for non-famous criminals, regardless of the crime in question. The OJ Simpson fiasco springs to mind. He had (and still has) plenty of supporters.

It's also a lot easier for people to accuse the victim of lying and having ulterior motives (e.g; five minutes of fame, money, etc) when a celebrity is involved.

This case has NOTHING to do with sex. A lot of people are talking about it as though it was some girl who had drunken sex and later regretted it. But she was dead-weight unconscious. Dragged around like a rag doll into photo poses, continually assaulted and humiliated over several hours by several people, filmed and photographed, later laughed and bragged about.

This is not a drunken fumble in the dark. It's a prolonged abuse of a victim who was completely out of it, by a pack of morally depraved monsters who showed absolutely no remorse right up until months later when they were finally sentenced to a bit of light punishment.

Too fucking busy, and vice versa.

I'm highlighting the fact that there are challenges made against a traditional scientific discourse as being bias in favour of male perspectives.Bit irrelevant I admit.
