    - A New York judge has thrown out a lawsuit filed by a group of atheists, ruling that a pair of World Trade Center beams in the shape of a cross can be included in a memorial museum of the 9/11 terror attacks.
American Atheists filed the lawsuit in July, arguing that the "government enshrinement of the cross" was an impermissible mingling of church and state.
The World Trade Center cross, two intersecting steel beams that held up when the twin towers collapsed on September 11, 2001, is seen as iconic to some.
The cross was moved in July from near a church to its new home at the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, located at ground zero in Lower Manhattan. Father Brian Jordan, a Franciscan priest who ministered to workers clearing the area after the attacks, led a ceremonial blessing of the cross.
Federal Judge Deborah Batts of the Southern District of New York ruled Thursday that display of the beams is permissible because they bear historical importance.
Named defendants included the museum, New Jersey, the city of New York, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.
"The museum is gratified by the decision," Mark Alcott, the lawyer for the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, told CNN on Friday.

Oh come on big deal :/ it's just a symbol. Aetheists should be focusing on other more pressing issues.

While the ex christian atheists do that,       we ex muslim atheists are still scared of being killed.

Honestly the atheists born in christian families are alot better of.   At least with them their families still accept them even after they come out of the closet.

I agreed with Dave Silverman when it came to the cross but protesting against a christmas tree.........aren't there more things like rich pastors not getting taxed that need to get attention instead of filing court cases about a friggen christmans tree.

But the cross wasn't even part of the original museum. It was moved there.

Do they plan to put up symbols of all the other people's religions? Didn't others use symbols for strength. I'm 100% with Silverman. He may come across as a whiney bitch but his point is as valid as it gets. You either recognise all the non/faiths or none.

Fingers crossed for their case to win.

One on hand I just can't get myself to care about this, on the other is Hitchen's point that of course there are going to be a lot of 'crosses' in the rubble of the WTC, that's what cross supports are, it would have been actually miraculous if a metal Star of David was found in the rubble or Allah forbid a metal Star and Crescent.  On the third hand it's pretty cheap of religious people to think that finding a random cross in the rubble is a sign, a sign of what? that Jesus was there? That God let those people die? That Jesus was there for all the non Christians who died in the building? It doesn't make much sense.

So once again I'm left with the classic Irish man's dilemma, do I eat the potato or do I let it ferment so I can drink it later?

Stuff like this makes us ex muslims giggle at the atheists from liberal christian and jewish families.

We are dealing with extreme family drama, death threats, pretending to do religious rituals multiple times a day, being paranoid almost everyday hoping that our apostasy doesn't get figured out before we're ready

and...... these guys are getting worked up over the government putting up a Christmas tree  Roll Eyes

Like I agree with David Silverman on most things but how the hell does one get so worked up and file a law suit over a Christmas tree just blows my mind.....

The Christmas tree is just a fricken decoration there are more important things to worry about....

Yea but it's very particular to the US geography where separation between Church and State is hugely paramount even to various religious traditions. For me personally when I was Mormon it was hugely uncomfortable to have our school athletic coach ask us to recite the Lord's prayer because despite being "Christian" we never cared much for memorizing the Lord's Prayer unlike other Christian traditions. I agree there are more important and perhaps less legal things to care about, but it's still a huge stickler in that small area of debate

So once again I'm left with the classic Irish man's dilemma, do I eat the potato or do I let it ferment so I can drink it later?
