    Interesting.

    +++++++++++

Hate crimes to include attacks on punks, goths and metallers

Greater Manchester Police is to become the first force in the country to officially record such offences in the same way as those based on disability, race, religion and sexual orientation.

The move means victims of crime who feel they have been targeted because of their distinctive clothing, hairstyle and even musical tastes will receive special support from the police.

At the moment courts only consider hate as an aggravating factor when sentencing if it is based on religion, ethnicity, disability and sexual orientation.

But campaigners want the law to be broadened to include a much wider range of groups and subcultures.

The decision by the Greater Manchester force to redraft the definition of a hate-crime has been welcomed by the mother of Sophie Lancaster, a gap year student who was brutally murdered in 2007 because of the way she was dressed.

The 20-year-old, who was a member of the Goth subculture and liked to dress in black clothes and wear stark make-up, was attacked by a group of youths as she walked through a park in Rossendale, Lancashire with her boyfriend.

She was left in a coma and never regained consciousness after being repeatedly kicked in the head by a mob who took exception to the way she and her boyfriend were dressed.

The Sophie Lancaster Foundation was later set up in order to campaign for better protection in law for members of subcultures.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police admitted that the definition of an alternative subculture was broad but said it included Goths, Emos, Punks and Metallers.

Assistant Chief Constable Garry Shewan, said: “The launch of this new strand of recordable hate crime is a major breakthrough. We are able to officially recognise that people who wish to express their alternative subculture identity freely should not have to tolerate hate crime – something that many people have to endure on a daily basis.

“This means that we can recognise the impact that alternative subculture hate crime has on its victims and the wider community, we can offer better support and risk assess the potential for repeat victimisation.”

The force is also planning to offer special training for police officers to better understand the
    victims of such hate crimes.

ACC Shewan continues: “Sophie’s tragic death brought forward a need to recognise that there are many other victims of hate crime that should be protected by law. “

He added: “Hate crime ruins many people’s lives and in some cases can tragically cost lives. We work with many organisations to raise the awareness of what hate crime is and how victims can be supported and we will continue to encourage our communities to challenge it, report it and help us to stop it.”

Sylvia Lancaster, Sophie’s mother said: “It is a very proud day for me personally and the rest of the team. It is a validation of the work we have undertaken in the past five years and hopefully other forces will follow GMP’s lead.”

What's the point of being a punk/goth/whatever then? If the state is going to baby sit your ass, might as well pop in a Mariah Carey CD.

Not saying people shouldn't be protected. Just not because of some kind of identity politics, but just cause, y'know, they're people.

It's so fucking mindlessly stupid and shameful to hate people for what they wear or listen to. Especially sad to see it in Manchester. I've always seen it as a melting pot of different music and fashion. Back when the clubs used to throw out at 2am, we'd all roll down to Jilly's Rockworld. It was open till 7am or something. You'd get allsorts in there. Punks, goths, metalheads, skateboarders, hip hoppers, ravers. Never saw any trouble in there. Shame it closed down.

Too fucking busy, and vice versa.

I used to go to a place in London in the basement of a sex shop. Normal Soho flotsam, augmented at 3am by transvestites from Madame JoJo's, playing pool with builders who would leave at 5.30 to go to work.

Happy days. Now closed too, alas.

Seems like its a result of a goth girl being murdered after being beaten up by strangers, her family campaigned for violent attacks to be categorised as a hate crime

Yeah read that in the article.... that's a tragedy for sure. Just find it a bit strange that certain crimes get this label of "hate crime"... is there ever a "love crime" committed against anyone, especially against any minority groups?

It's just legal jargon I guess. It's a category thing. Certain crimes motivated by certain biases can carry higher penalties. A "hate crime" against a subculture is equally reprehensible to one against race/ethnicity/religion, and so should be equally punished under the law.

This will just free-up a judge to come down harder on these crimes.

I used to attract a lot of aggro for the way I looked - many a 'hate crime' narrowly averted by charm or fleetness of foot.

Seen from afar, Britain appears to be going mad - outraged about something, anything, 24/7. A chill pill or two would stop more 'hate crimes' than any legislation.

Yep. It's really strange to be witnessing all this from outside. Having never been to Britain, I had this idea/stereotype in my head that it was mostly full of slightly uptight, reserved but polite people. The last few years that I've been more in tune with what's been happening there internally have made me rethink all that. I love British TV shows more than ever though.

It's like a huge crisis of confidence, flailing around for legal meaures to cure deep unease.

There's a lot of anger and resentment festering. The underprivileged are utterly demonised by the tabloids. It's gonna get worse. Benefit cuts and tax breaks for the rich just announced. It's almost as though the government wants another riot.

Oh yes, well, y'know, nothing justifies a stricter police state better than that.

I love Britain, but if ever we have a child, I'm glad it won't have to grow up British. Japan is going to melt down economically, Britain socially. I've never given a damn about money, but I do love people. Society if you will.

Though, much of this is tangential to the thread topic. Hate crime is nothing new. It's long overdue that the law be amended to reflect common prejudices.

Not sure I agree. I think the law more reflects anxieties than prejudices.

This law doesn't. This law reflects a very real and very ancient form of prejudice.

There have been people convicted in Britain, (and elsewhere), on the grounds of partly or wholly falling into the above three subcultures.  If a prosecutor in Britain can introduce goth trappings, or punk music, as evidence that the defendant is guilty, then why should the same prosecutor not be allowed to introduce those factors as an aggravating factor when they are attributes of the victim?

It almost seems like the prosecutors right to convict at all costs outweighs the victims right to justice.

The only 'love crime' I can think of is 'crimes of passion' in which love has actually been the mitigating factor in judgement, although more in regards to a man killing his woman, than a woman killing her man.

    Yep.   yes

Very often in discussions with people at uni, or my bro, his friends, my friends, you can hear a longing in their voice for a riot to occur when the topic comes up.

I'd say the point is listening to music one actually like, and not choosing one's listening habits based on whether or the state is babysitting one's ass. Does that make sense ?
