I am reading Alex Comfort The Anxiety Makers, about how doctors became involved with sex.  It seems American doctors used to carry out fgm on baby girls and the idea of cold showers may be traced back to one line in a sixteenth century book!  It is a terrifying tale of censorship, taking seriously jokes, chinese whispers and agendas.

Comfort contrasts Islamic and Indian attitudes towards really repressive Western ideas, but also notes the repressive nature of traditional societies.

What contribution has Islam made to ideas about sex?

When you are a Bear of Very Little Brain, and you Think of Things, you find sometimes that a Thing which seemed very Thingish inside you is quite different when it gets out into the open and has other people looking at it.

I haven't read the book you mention, but I have been studying the history of sexuality for the last year or so & it is FASCINATING!

I believe in the UK that clitorodectomy (probs spelt wrong) used to happen because of Freudian beliefs about mature & immature orgasms. It was another means to control womens' sexuality. Freud believed that immature women had orgasms through their clitorises, whereas a mature woman would have vaginal orgasms. Therefore, the belief was that by cutting off the clitoris, the woman would mature in some respect. Freud was a fucked up wanker & I despair at how he has become central to understanding sexuality still. The whole world revolved around his cock, basically.

I don't know what contributions Islam has made, but I find most doctrines & dogmas have control of sexuality, women's especially. When you throw morality into the mix, it becomes even more toxic & dangerous.

I really recommend Veronica Mottier's book - A Very Short Introduction to Sexuality. I think this week you can even get it for free as it is on the Oxford University Press & I saw a thread here saying this week their books are free to download.

And Foucault as well (how could I forget). History of Sexuality. It's fascinating too.
