I am reading Alex Comfort "The Anxiety Makers" and it is discussing various manias against witchcraft and similar.  A quieter modern version are breakfast cereals - Kellog's All Bran cleanses the soul as well as the guts dontchaknow?

As Islam seems to have collected these various manias, I wonder has anyone asked about its psychology?

When you are a Bear of Very Little Brain, and you Think of Things, you find sometimes that a Thing which seemed very Thingish inside you is quite different when it gets out into the open and has other people looking at it.

    I have.

`But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.
`Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: `we're all mad here. I'm mad.  You're mad.'
`How do you know I'm mad?' said Alice.
`You must be,' said the Cat, `or you wouldn't have come here.'
