  • Inclusion of Muslim women in social services
     OP - November 09, 2013, 06:53 PM

I need to provide a basic outline of how service to Muslim clients differs from service to non-Muslim clients in women/crisis shelters for the local crisis team.
I am going to include all the basics, of course, for washing and prayers and food.
Does anyone have any other advice, for instance, is there a universally accepted version of Quran that I don't know about? So often I have seen one translated version or another dismissed for this or that reason. Which could be kept on hand, English/Arabi version for clients who want to reference it?
I do NOT want to involve the local masjids or Imams. The locations of such shelters are supposed to be kept secret.
    Examples:
In case anyone is not clear on what/why I am doing this, it is so that when a Muslim woman is fleeing her abusive husband and wants to keep a Pepsi bottle in her bathroom for washing, the staff in the shelter does not assume she is going to be smoking crack with it. So she is allowed to have a prayer rug in her room, etc.
The concern is that if Muslim women are not allowed to practice religion in these safehouses, they will leave and end up in danger again.
    Thanks!

I don't know about universally accepted Qur'an but the one that I've found most people have and reccomend, well in the UK is the Oxford world classics translation by M. A. S. Abdel Haleem.

    three

This British progressive Muslim women's organisation may be able to point you in the direction of people who have dealt with the same issues you are seeking help with in the UK social services. Perhaps you could e-mail them, explain your situation, and if they are not able to help you, they might be able to point you in the direction of someone who has experience of the kind of thing you are looking for.

Many years ago I worked with a women's shelter called Nari Samity.  I think it is closed now but you might be able to trace people who were involved.

Wouldn't the basics for a muslim woman be a prayer mat, water and food?

`But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.
`Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: `we're all mad here. I'm mad.  You're mad.'
`How do you know I'm mad?' said Alice.
`You must be,' said the Cat, `or you wouldn't have come here.'

Sort of. There is more detail than that. Like, what kind of food? Not pork. See?

Is there any law that says shelters have to meet religious dietary requirements?

If someone is homeless I highly doubt they would care where the food came from, they would just accept the food as long as its clean and healthy.

I think there are some basic requirements on religious accommodation in most community services in order to acquire federal funding, but I know that in crisis centers it is lax, perhaps because it is an emergency service. Probably the law says "reasonable accommodation", which translates into "peanut butter".

Booze and pork are just about the greatest things in the world. If muslims have to go without peanut butter as well, allah is pointing and laughing.

But they won't actually know allah is laughing.
