  • Question: Imagine in the future we have medical technology that allows us to live forever. And say it's so far in the future that it only costs $1 per year. Say there is a 70 year old who is contemplating suicide. see my post below for context.

    My friends are an important part of my life, losing them would be like having no reason to live for.
    Sorry if Im saying this, but this thread doesn't make much sense to me.  And I never found myself in a situation where someone I care about, would want to commit suicide. There must be some reason that has pushed them this far, if it has then I would consider myself a really bad friend, because if I didn't help him/her in those difficult times, how the hell would I be able to do that when he or she already made the decision?
    I know, my ideas sound like contradictions.

    Fortunately you could change your attitude towards death. There is no law of nature preventing you from changing your attitude.

    I didn't say you would. I said that you can change your attitude about death. You can change your attitude about death WITHOUT changing your attitude about your loved ones.

    Because you are asking for our opinions about a hypothetical situation of a 70 year old man who is contemplating on comitting suicide without providing any reason or any considerations which is why I find the question pointless.

    As for the second and third question,because some people tend to be offended by the blunt statements I make and I'm glad you don't seem to be one of them.

    As a serious answer to the topic I feel that a person in their sane mind should have the option to cease existence at their choosing (I'm not sure how you could stop anyone really). So regardless if they're 21 or 2,100 years old, my answer wouldn't really change and thus the situation isn't so special anyway.

    This is why I added the caveat of "in one's sane mind". I.E. The person is not experiencing a temporary moment of profound emotional distress that is affecting their decision-making. Or is a minor who has not reached full mental development.

    Otherwise, I can think of very little reason to infringe on this fundamental aspect of self-determination.
