  • Have you ever gone through an event which turned you towards God?
     OP - March 03, 2014, 11:31 AM

Recently i had to go through a most terrible experience where my other half was completely out of contact for 10 days while on her trip to India, before that she was always in contact every other day. We expected the worse since it was completely out of character and it dint help when some acquaintance of the family related an incident where her boyfriend was kidnapped from the same little village and held for 2 weeks about 2-3 years ago.
I have never been through anything like that before and the hopelessness and agony was soul destroying. Usually in such circumstances we would go to any lengths to make sure our loved ones are safe. At some point during those 10 days i realized i din't pray or call out to God and was adamant that no matter what i will not give in. In the end everything turned out well and she was fine.

I hope no one ever goes through such an experience of absolute hopelessness but if you have then what was your reaction and did that event change your mind about God?

i don't think i would bother, because i assume god can tell the difference between genuine belief, and desperate trying your luck.
If he doesn't want to help me, unless I turn to him, then fuck him and his blackmail.

Hey, I'm really glad to hear everything worked out.

As for me, something happened to my town a couple years ago, and my family was decently involved, and the event was just shitty enough to make international news. Almost everyone in my family delved deeper into their religion to cope, and, today, they are still kind of using it to make sense of it all and get through the lingering effects/new nonsense we have to contend with because of it.

I, however, even at the worst parts, found myself never invoking God. Like Dr. Sloth said above, I knew it was a waste of time and was never even tempted. It did, however, give me a new appreciation for religion: there are some situations in which I think the best possible outcome would be to hold fast to religious beliefs, even if wrong, because some people couldn't handle the alternatives.

True that Dr.Sloth, i don't think i would pray to him even if science proves it beyond doubt that such an entity exists. Although it would give me immense morbid satisfaction if he did exist and i can call him every name under the sun.
Thanks Lua and i hope you and your loved ones are safe and getting over the incident. I guess religion helps believers get through horrid events in their lives and it acts like a placebo. I wouldn't want to take that away from anyone if thats what comforts them and gets them through but its quite wonderful to know there are people out there who share the same outlook as yourself and strengthen your conviction.
Although most of the girlfriends family are either Pagans or Atheists, i'm not sure how i would have reacted if i was surrounded by prayers and such.

Thanks, infinite_del. We're definitely doing better! And I agree...I used to think that we'd all be better off if religion was just gone so that we could all be on the same page, but I was grateful for it in those days, perhaps selfishly.

Also, if you knew for sure he existed, you'd still not relent? That is some dedication to your morals! I would jump ship so fast it would make your head spin. If I can suck up to professors and bosses, I can do it with God.

Good to know things are better at your ennd and hope it keeps getting better. Religion might give hope to some but it's a tool used against many to conform to the absurd and cruel.
Well I have no doubts whatsoever that no such entity exists so IMHO it's futile to think otherwise. Best of luck with everything and a safe weekend.
