Saudi Cleric Claims: The Sun Revolves Around the Earth

Forget what you learned at school. A Saudi cleric recently said that the sun revolves around the Earth, citing the Koran as proof.

We have all been taught at school that the Earth revolves around the sun, but, according tow a senior Saudi cleric, we’ve been misled.

In fact, Saleh Al-Fawzan, a member of the Saudi Council of Senior Scholars, recently claimed in a televised interview that not only does the Earth not revolve around the sun, the opposite is true.

Al-Fawzan’s proof for his claim that the sun revolved around the Earth is none other than the Koran. The interview aired on Saudi Channel 1 and was translated by the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI).

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kqv0iuiBta8
In the interview, the host asks Al-Fawzan, “Allah says in a Koranic verse: ‘And the sun runs towards its stopping point. That is the determination of the All-Powerful, the All-Knowing.’ Does the sun revolve around the earth?”

Saleh Al-Fawzan replies by saying, “There is no doubt about it. The Koran says: ‘The sun runs…’ Nevertheless, they say that the sun stands in place and the Earth moves. This contradicts the Koran.”

“Ignoring the Koran and adopting modern theories is not something a Muslim can do. A Muslim must follow the Koran,” he adds.

In another recent science-related claim by Muslims, an Iranian cleric declared that famed Jewish scientist Albert Einstein was not Jewish at all.

In fact, said Ayatolla Mahadavi Kani, Einstein was a Shiite Muslim who converted to Islam and got the idea for his Theory of Relativity from Islam.

Just think if it actually was scientifically proved that the sun goes around the earth and then YouTube/lecture dawah scholars would yell: "Quran clearly describes that sun goes around the earth in 6th century. Can you believe that, 6th century? How can you say it was written by mere human? You see the signs and you deny the signs."

Don't you think it would be funny how the same guys who are now claiming that Quran is crystal clear how it claims that moon goes around earth, earth around sun and sun moves in larger orbit different from two former, and use it to prove divine origin, but then they would totally turn their view and claim how Quran perfectly describes flat earth and is therefore from God?

Yeah. I think Zakir Naik would find some proof of foreknowledge from Quran even if science proved the earth to be flattened ice cream in space.

I'm trying to visualise the logistics of this. The orbits of the inner planets would be intersecting with the position of earth, especially so when the sun and planet are on opposite sides of the earth.

What will happen to these people if they are confronted with undeniable evidence which shows that earth and all other planets revolve around the sun. To my own sadness, I think that a lot of them would just ignore it and come up with some conspiracy theory and say "quran is true, khalas". Some Muslim clerics have claimed that the dinosaurs are all just one giant conspiracy by the west, but mermaids might actually be true (hence the fiqhi rules and fatawas).   Cheesy

Why do you even bother? Fuck logic, fuck science. The important part is whether or not it says anything about it in the quran, if it isn't necessary for the deen, you are dwelling too much on matters that "do not concern us".

Eh wot? I knew about the mermaid munching rules. They're so important I had them tattooed on my arm for possible future reference. I hadn't heard about the "dinosaurs are a conspiracy" stuff though. That sounds like awesome popcorn. Cheesy

Because how can you explain fossils and bones from extinct animals going back more than 100 million years in time, but then have Adam naming every animal known and whatnot. I don't think Mo and other religious figures knew about animals going extinct...

Anyway, every single fact and evidence for anything that goes against the quran is just a conspiracy, didn't you get the memo?

I heard it very rarely, osmanthus, since most just try to attack carbon dating, and for some reason more theists are willing to buy that basic matters in chemistry are extremely unreliable and that the scientists are all deceptive, but postulating that the dinosaur bones are a hoax is just waaay too out there.

I actually met him once. parrot

He's an ultra conservative salafi. Unapologetic in his ignorance. In that bubble, the sun goes around the earth, the heart is where our intellect and thoughts are centered, and the first man was a 90 foot tall giant. There is no getting through to them. The absurd things I heard from those Saudi scholars, all backed up by scripture, was the first step in my journey out.

There is nothing wrong with being wrong, and it is very dangerous to hold on to your version of "truth" when the evidence strongly suggests against it.

Why see it as your world being shattered? When converts talk about their experience of "enlightenment", they talk about how the world opened up for them and they realized what was true and real. Your world is not being shattered, your world is opening up for you.

Ye I always couldn't accept that this world is nothing but a test, for me I always felt there has to be more to life then getting through the tests of life and preparing for death (Islam in a nutshell).
