March 21, 2014: The blasphemy case against a Christian road sweeper from Lahore is due back in court tomorrow. Release partners who are supporting Sawan Masih and his family say they are hopeful that the judge will reach a verdict at tomorrow’s hearing.
Accusations of blasphemy made against Sawan sparked two days of rioting in Joseph Colony, Lahore, last year in which more than 200 homes were set alight (Prayer Alert, March 11, 2013). The violence sparked widespread protests by Christians demanding from officials greater protection for their communities.
Due to the sensitivity of the case, it is understood that tomorrow’s hearing will be heard in private.

A 35-year-old Pakistani Christian street sweeper, Sawan Masih, who has been accused of blasphemy by a close friend, is now awaiting a decision in his bail petition. LEAD (Legal Evangelical Association Development) has filed a bail petition for Sawan Masih and has followed his case.
Lawyers for Sawan Masih, a Christian accused of blasphemy and jailed, are hopeful for his bail.
He has a petition for bail scheduled to be heard on 15 April, 2013 in the Session Court of Lahore. An Additional District and Sessions Court last week on Tuesday 2 April, 2013 handed over copies of case records to Sawan Masih.
It is said that the Joseph Colony arson happened after the alleged act of blasphemy by Sawan Masih.
The police had booked Sawan under 295 C PPC. According to the FIR (First Incident Report), there is no word by which the allegation under section 295 C PPC was made out, but after a second written application to SP Investigation City Division by Complainant Shahid Imram, mentioning that Swan said "Our Jesus will come back again and must come back, and He is the Son of God" and said "SOME DEROGATORY WORDS about PROPHET OF ISLAM" which is afterthought formed after consultation, the story of the prosecution appears highly doubtful, said Gill.
