So my very scholary muslim brother was here and he always gets me thinking about how people become so wrapped up and convinced about religion. so I know there is a lot of ex muslim scholars on here (happyM, Cornflower, Lua to name a few) did you guys get caught up in the illusion and what exactly led youl away or ripped ul away from it?

I just find it fasicnating my mum and brother talking so FIRMLY about islam and the feelings and allah and it is weird listening to these conversations as someone who lives in reality, would make me squirmy somewhat and amused somewhat.

My brother was speaking about how ppl read the quraan out of context and without understanding and thats y they dont accept islam as true or understand it

my mum spoke about how in surah fatiha it say 'guide us on the straight part' and how reading that with understanding changed her

Feels like alien talk to me, but i was once like them

I'm no scholar, ex-Muslim or otherwise, but for me religion in general and Islam in particular became more clearly untrue and man-mad the more I learned about human beings and their society in general and Islamic history, theology and law in particular. I don't get those who say how "knowledge" makes them more certain and strong in their faith, for me the delusion could not be kept the more I learnt about Islam and its nature.

It may just be simple as some people needing religion to function, and they are prepared to be however intellectually dishonest to themselves in order to keep that faith. I know a woman, very gifted and intelligent individual, but someone more rigid and radical in her faith is hard to come across. Perhaps one day she will wake up, or perhaps it is too late so she will continue with status quo in order to be able to live with herself and the life she had chosen for herself. Either way, I find it strange that she has not yet come to the same conclusion, but then again she was always prone to dogmatic beliefs.
