I'm not saying one is "better" than the other, or that one is mutilation while the other isn't. I meant we have to make a distinction when discussing this topic or else we won't be able to fully understand what is meant by this anti-FGM "fatwa". They may stop cutting and sewing up their little girls, saying it is "un-Islamic", but continue cutting of the clit all while the rest of us think that these people have progressed and left this barbaric practice. It might very well be that they just exchanged the extreme mutilation for a liiiitle lesser extreme mutilation, feeling good about themselves. The whole thing is quite sneaky, FGM has ALWAYS been "against" Islam. Clitoridectomy on the other hand isn't. So what is included in this fatwa's definition of "FGM", I wonder. It's an important question to be answered.

Agreed. Let people chose after the age of 16 or 18, my mother didn't let me get even my ears pierced until I was 16 and still thinks I have mutilated my ears as I chose to have that as my 16th birthday present.

OK that is a welcome announcement, but it is exasperating that people will only take it from some theocratic organisation who says god hates it, rather than just using their own brains and working it out for themselves.

I don't think it's all religion though. FGM is not a thing in most of the Middle East, for example, whilst its a problem in many non-Muslim communities in sub-Saharan Africa.

None of the pro-FGM Islamic articles or fatwas I've read ever specify what exactly or how much of it is to be cut; it's always just "not too much" and a long screed about all the "benefits" and the hadith. It's basically permission to butcher girls, could you imagine them being this sloppy and unclear about male circumcision "yeah, it's sunnah to cut the penis but not too much, yo".
