  • Why do we go to university?
     OP - June 27, 2014, 07:57 PM

Why did you go to university? There are three reasons why we go, from a personal standpoint:

Fear - People in this category fear that if they don't get a degree then they will not be able to find a job

Love - People in this category go to university with a genuine passion for the subject they are studying

Greed - People in this category go to university and study the courses that lead to the highest paying jobs, regardless of whether they like the course or not.

I've just completed the second year of my course (Physics), and I recently came to the realisation that I actually went due to fear. It's not that I don't like physics, I do but I can't see myself making a living from it and being happy. This makes me feel quite depressed, seems like I've wasted so much time.

So I've decided what I really want to do for a living, it's something I've pretty much always wanted to do but I couldn't chase the career as a Muslim. With anything though, preparation is key and the first thing i need is an income, which will also be necessary for me to move out as I haven't told my family about my apostasy yet and I can't stand living at the house anymore. I want to move out ASAP!. All is well so far, I've begun my money making. At the moment I'm making around £500 - £1000 per month, and by this time next year my aim is to making x100 as much. Yes, this is very possible and no I'm not money hungry, if I'm going to alone be for the foreseeable future I need to be financially stable.

    Anyways, enough of my rambling.

Why did you go to university? Fear, love or greed?

P.s I know some people are forced but I'm just looking at those who had a choice.

EDIT: Search 'In the fall' on youtube, video by Steve Cutts. That pretty much sums up my fear.

Love. I love Physics, I enjoy learning Physics, I enjoy being surrounded by Physicists (and other scientists). The academic environment truly is wonderful. It's unfortunate you're not enjoying your time.

Combination of love and fear, love of the subject, and fear that without a decent education I'm never (and haven't yet) going to amount to much in life.

Inhale the good shit, exhale the bullshit.

    Because learning is a duty.

No free mixing of the sexes is permitted on these forums or via PM or the various chat groups that are operating.

I went for a mix of those things. Love my subject but want a job out of it too and also wouldn't mind earning a reasonable amount. TBH I think people in my area are way UNDERPAID for the services they provide people and the planet.

To better ones own life. To learn and grow and experience and open doors for your own future, to give more opportunities to shape your own path.

`But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.
`Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: `we're all mad here. I'm mad.  You're mad.'
`How do you know I'm mad?' said Alice.
`You must be,' said the Cat, `or you wouldn't have come here.'

I am just reminding your own words.

I am so glad to read you..  But question to you.,   Could you be making the same amount of money 500 to 1000 pounds a month  if you didn't go to school and college?

^You probably picked up the Marxist theory at uni, didn't you Tongue

Mostly, it's to be able to get a comfy job and live a comfy life. I feel that a university education is necessary to attain that and I chose a field I'd enjoy and that opens doors so I guess it's a combination of fear and love. Oh, and being educated is always nice in and of itself. I was raised to put a premium on education.

You know, it was only this year that I found out that the grading system in UK unis is class based.  Upper class (first), middle class (2.1), working class (2.2, or fail).

Felt a bit dumb what with studying sociology for 3 years already.  Grin

Some would argue it goes hand in hand.

.. unless you study any branch of the fine arts with a view to becoming an artist. Better money doesn't seem to enter into the equation there.

Nah, I picked it up from Mikhail Bakunin's works which is funny because he was a critic of Marxist theory. Lol

Yup,Lol, and its the upper class and middle class that gets the best job I bet. Over here if you don't have 2.2, then your best chance is to rely on someone important like an uncle or a family friend that works as an exec or a senior staff of a firm or govt parastatal.

Thank you for your response, I agree £100k a month is too much, at that point money is just a piece of paper in my eyes. I did forget to mention that once I'm doing what I really love, I'll stop making money that way.

And no, I probably wouldn't be able to make £500 - £1000 per month if I didn't go to school or college but my point in this thread is further education. Everyone should go to school, no question about it.

Sure university opens more doors but I'd prefer not to go through them if I know I won't be happy doing so.

The number of people who aren't happy with their current jobs around the world far outweigh those who do.

I agree, so many professions have inadequate paying jobs. Ofcourse, we'd all like a decent salary but that doesn't put you under 'Greed'.

I don't see why love of the subject is a superior position to have, over for example the desire to get paid.

Money is a necessary part of life, and the costs associated with living do nothing but rise, so someone choosing a career based on future earnings, makes no less a worthy decision than someone who chooses to study a subject primarily for the love of it.

For me, it was a combination of all three things, although "love" for the subject didn't factor in too much. I like the field, but I'm not passionate about it.

When you come from a country of a billion people, even gaining admission into a university or college is really competitive, unless you have parents who can spare a bit of cash to help you along. Bachelor degrees are useless. They don't really differentiate you from the rest of the crowd because almost everyone else has one.
A masters degree, especially from a US/UK university, is a better asset, although even these days it doesn't always offer a guarantee. If you are hoping to move abroad, a masters or PhD degree scores you more points for any visa criteria. So picking a field / specialisation that is in demand is definitely a smart move.

Having parents that can put you in touch with potential employers is still the biggest way to nudge your way ahead of the competition. I never wanted to go down that route, and I have been really lucky that I have managed to do reasonably well for myself without being forever indebted to a relative or some family friend for getting me a job.

At the end of the day, like it or not, money counts for a lot. It helps you to keep a roof over your head, food on the table and keeps the electricity running. And when you retire, you'll be able to sleep better if you know you have a reasonably healthy bank account and investments to keep you going. Not to mention all the nice things in life that you can enjoy like holidays or eating out. It doesn't necessarily have to be a university degree that helps you get to such an income level. In countries like the UK, there are a number of vocational routes that can pay just as well, if not better, than some graduate posts.

Ideally, doing what you love is a great aim, but in the real world, everyone can't achieve that or make a feasible living out of it. Most people I know, spend a good few years making as much money as they can in a profitable field, and then switching to a hobby or passion that they can enjoy. Seems like a sensible plan to me. I don't know how far I will get with mine  Tongue

Hmmm. I've known many a posho with a third. Though 'upper class' people have a head start at university because they go to rigorous schools.

Gotta balance ideals and dreams with pragmatic concerns.

Pragmatic concerns were far from my mind when I left university after two months for love, sex, bands and pubs.

I had a lovely time and have never regretted it, though now I am skint, ageing and unemployable. For the first time recently I was rejected for work I am well capable of because I have no qualifications.

Why do we go to University?

To join the middle class society and preserve the status quo of a class system

I'm afraid it isn't that simple. The problem with university (in like manner to many bourgeois institutions) is that it is inherently contradictory. On one hand it seeks to reduce the reserve army of labour, on the other, it entrenches the reserve army of labour even further.

    See,  for instance:
    https://www.marxists.org/archive/gorz/1970/destroy-university.htm

Outdated, but well worth a read.

To extend the good times we have with school friends for as long as possible before we afflict ourselves with too many responsibilities and become slaves to the system and surrender to the slow and inevitable march to the grave.

Too fucking busy, and vice versa.
