  • Why do we desire to live despite all the hardships..?
     OP - August 04, 2014, 12:06 AM

I mean, Isn't death much sweeter and peaceful than life? What's so special about life? Why people  say that "life is a gift"? Of course for some it might be.

    Please anything but bollywood.

    @INcePtion

Life is a blast! I mean; I know life sucks for some people and there is a significant amount of people that commit suicide every day. But, I would hate the idea of dying anywhere in the near future. Sure, death is inevitable but I have so many things on my to-do list; too many things to leave undone. Too many things to die out on.

Sure. I agree with that. But why do people desire life when death is such a better solution? Is it because we are afraid of death? Is it because some people think they will end up in hell? Is it because we are instilled with the idea that committing suicide is a sign of weakness?
Is it because we dont know what's going to happen after death...
Or is it simply a habit?

I'm gonna refrain from further serial posting to avoid getting repetitive and to let others participate but first:

I'm fairly sure that literally everyone has thought about what it'd be like if they were to simply commit suicide. I'm mostly okay with death. I wouldn't choose it upon myself, certainly not in my days of youth. Life has always thrown challenges at me and so far I've either been able to outright solve those challenges or simply run away from them until they give up and turn the other way. In general, I think people dislike the idea of suicide possibly because of how it could affect their loved ones, or they're just happy, or they're uncomfortable with the uncertainty of the afterlife(i.e. the possibility of going to hell).

I personally don't care much about the uncertainty. It would be pretty cool if we just dissolved into our spirit form upon death; visible to each other and all but living humans, and carried on existing. But I have no fear of the Abrahamic version of things, I am more disappointed in the Abrahamic god than anything. If there is anything I would hate above all else, it would be to die a Muslim.

Life did suck when we had to obey a creator who is all powerful and feels the need to control every aspect of everyone's life. That's probably why it's haraam to commit suicide Cheesy. Now we can do anything we want if it doesn't effect others in a negative way so i don't see why end it early? It's going to end eventually might as well make the most of it Smiley.

Because I enjoy seeing, hearing, tasting, eating, drinking, touching, feeling, loving, kissing, fucking, fighting, laughing, crying, thinking, dreaming, etc. Being dead kinda puts an abrupt end to all of that. So staying alive is part of my long-term strategy to keep doing things like that.

Too fucking busy, and vice versa.

It's usually boredom that makes us think this way, been there many times..  anyway, just wait until you fall in love with some guy soon (if you havent already), life will suddenly appear magical for however long it lasts, if it doesn't, move onto someone or something else to stir your passions  : )

What Ishina said. Plus survival instinct.

`But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.
`Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: `we're all mad here. I'm mad.  You're mad.'
`How do you know I'm mad?' said Alice.
`You must be,' said the Cat, `or you wouldn't have come here.'

Anyways i really love what Ishina wrote but if you're feeling very down or depressed, those simple pleasures in life don't have any effect on you, food can have no taste, nothing makes you smile or laugh, or love  :(

because individuals and species which had a lesser natural desire to live, did not survive as well.
If we are accepting natural selection, it would be amazing to not find a desire to live. No different from desire for food, despite all the bad tasting and poisonous stuff.

This might sound controversial but I think for some people being dead is better than being alive in a very gloomy, dejected life. Feeling nothing is better than feeling an awful dismay your whole life especially if you live under very authoritarian conditions.

Desiring life is a natural instict. Even if you try to kill yourself you can't (if you're not at your limit).
I think it's natural to be afraid of death. Most of the people fear it because they don't know what's going to happen. Even if you are certain about Hell or whatever you can't be sure 100%.
I never thought suicide is a sign of weakness. I think it's really hard to do it. In Asia suicide has other meanings too.
    It depends on the countries.

I think it's because we don't know what's going to happen.
However I understand you. I sometimes question myself about this stuff too ^^

Well, who knows what's on the other side? It could potentially be worse than life. It's a bit like walking into a dark, unknown abyss to avoid the trouble of walking up a really steep hill (if life is shit). The arduous known is always better than the completely unknown, especially if there's no returning so yeah I'm agreeing with Oz "who told you death would be so jolly?". And you're going to experience death eventually anyway so no need to hasten the journey. Oh, and what Ishina said.

I'd say our desire to live is just human instinct. There are a lot of people who are suicidal, but most often than not, when they are actually close to death (usually one that they did not plan), it's a terrifying thing. Some suddenly find reasons to live- whatever those reasons are keeps people going. Maybe some want to see how far they can go? The question "but what if I die and I miss something important/haven't reached my full potential etc". Death can be scary, it is the end after all. You become nothing. You find comfort in that or you don't.

Because this life is the only one I've ever known and every now and then I experience joy which is enough to make me want to keep living. If asked to define what is joy there soon comes a point where I can't explain it but I simply accept that joy is the emotion I feel and that's good enough for me.

I once read about people who had attempted suicide by jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. It's quite popular as a suicide spot, but every so often somebody will survive the 67 metre fall. Story is that of all those survivors interviewed, every one of them said that about halfway down they realised that none of their reasons for jumping were really all that good, and that their problems could be sorted by other means. grin12

Presumably this means that all jumpers had the same thoughts, but most don't live to be questioned about it.

I have heard from a doctor that most people who somehow survive after suicidal attempts, literally beg their doctors to make them OK if they are still under the risk of death. The exceptions are the really traumatised patients.

Because we're evolved to do exactly that. At the same time those that are suicidal are evolved to be that way also, but it's telling that they are a minority in almost any group, regardless of the hardships that people are facing.

Why did I desire to live despite being depressed/suicidal? Well for one it was just the simple fear of death and pain, and fear that I hadn't lived/experienced all the good things that I could. To have never experienced romantic love / not reaching my personal potential / not contributed to others' experience, those are all things I regretted not having significantly experienced. On the other hand, it was much more than just this fear. It was the realization that I didn't really require all that much to make me happy in life, and was fortunate enough to be able to experience those things which did. Just a blue sky and shining sun overhead, a football, and a clear field to run in. This was always enough for me, when I finally realized it, and you could say that this realization is what actually saved my life.

    how fuck works without shit??
