     OP - August 09, 2014, 12:54 PM

I have been reading quite a lot of fantasy novels lately. Most of them are quite serious so if you guys can recommend any humorous fantasy novels specifically dark humor, then that would be great.

    His Dark Materials?

`But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.
`Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: `we're all mad here. I'm mad.  You're mad.'
`How do you know I'm mad?' said Alice.
`You must be,' said the Cat, `or you wouldn't have come here.'

I used to read alot more novels in my childhood , alot of them fantasy.

    Fantasy Series:

Lord of the Rings (read all of the books but completely forgot almost all of the plot over time)

    Harry Potter

    Percy Jackson and the olympians

    The Bartimeaus Trilogy

i hear the inheritance cycle was good but i;ll read it after I'm done with a song of ice and fire.

Of course only pick up other fantasy books once you have read a Lord of Rings and A Song of Ice and Fire.

If you have not finished either of those two series read them first before moving onto anything else.

George RR Martin and his Song Of Ice and Fire will reach the same status as Lord of the Rings with both the novels and the tv series gaining huge popularity , international audience and mainstream acceptance.

How can any fantasy novel list be complete without a mention of Frank Herbert's DUNE series? (scifi is fantasy to the detractors).

Jedi concurs with the likes of Ghazzals of Ice & Fire, Allah of the Rings, Haroon Potter and would also like to add: Timothy Zahn 'Heir to the Empire' which was the first mainstream venture into the epic Star Wars Expanded Universe (which has now been discontinued and relegated to the garbage heap following Disney's procurement of the SW brand. It is now part of the 'SW Legend' literature and non-canon).

Maybe in terms of popularity, yes.

But in terms of historical importance and standing within the genre, not even close. And I say this as someone who prefers ASOIAF to LOTR, the first 3 books anyway.

    Not exactly humorous fantasy.

I liked the Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy... Even forgot I'd read it. But it's filled with humour  Afro

Well Tyrion can be quite funny and witty.     And I thought the death scene of one character was pretty funny (the main death during the Battle of Castle Black).

GoT is filled with dark humor - I suspect that this is a reflection of the irreverant tone expressed in the novels.

Thanks Afro, I've read the lord of the rings, so I guess the first book of A song of ice and fire is the next step.

Finally a thread I can contribute in.

If you're looking for humour, I don't think I've ever read anything funnier than the Hitchhikers Guide, all five books in the original trilogy (don't read the Eoin Colfer one).
Bartimaeus trilogy is also extremely enjoyable.
Dark humour: Misery by Stephen King. Haha.

I do have to warn you about the length.   There are currently 5 book outs of the the 7 released and each is approximately 800- 1000 pages long.

Two of them: storm of swords and Dance with dragons are over 1000 pages.  So for people that were did not have the patience to read Lord of the rings will definitely not able to make it through a song of ice and fire.

For humorous fantasy, I'd try Mark Twain, Douglas Adams or Terry Pratchett.

I would recommend Steven Erikson's series Malazan Book of the Fallen. Not particularly humorous, but really fucking cool.

Salman Rushdie's 'Midnight Children' is a charming tale sprinkled with humour.

I'm glad there's another fan. To be fair I haven't read past House of Chains yet, but I have the next three books and I'll get to it as soon as possible.

If you haven't heard them before, there's a Summoning-like band called Caladan Brood that's very much worth checking out Smiley

Wow, that sounds glorious! Love the name, though I probably would have called my band after the more Dickensian sounding names in the MBotF: Sgt Whiskeyjack, or Iskaral Pust.

Metal-archives labels them as epic/atmospheric black metal, so we can stick with that Smiley If you like this then you should definitely check out Summoning (Minas Morgul and Stronghold albums, at first) because they're the pioneers of the genre.

Heh! That reminds me, there is a thrash/folk band in the Netherlands named Chain of Dogs, and their 2008 EP is called Bridgeburners. So fucking cool!
