    Beloved actor Robin Williams was found dead on Monday, police reported.

    He was 63.

    The apparent cause of death was suicide by asphyxiation, authorities said. According to his publicist, Williams had been battling severe depression.

    Police said that Williams was found unconscious around noon in his home in Tiburon, California, near San Francisco.

    Williams was best known for his starring roles in classic comedies like Mrs. Doubtfire, Good Morning, Vietnam and Jumanji, but also in dramas like Dead Poets Society. He won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Dr. Sean Maguire in Good Will Hunting. He rose to fame while playing Mork the alien in the TV show Mork & Mindy, a Happy Days spinoff.

    very saddened. He was one of the good guys. Very funny, compassionate, his roles in Dead Poets Society,  Good Will Hunting and Fisher King so memorable.

    very poignant that a man who made so many millions happy succumbed to such sadness and depression.

    yeah the roles he played take on a great poignancy now. So many of them were about characters trying to fight off the darkness.

    He made some great kids films too, he had cross generational appeal.

    Another great movie he made was 'Awakenings' with Robert De Niro

    Jumanji is the only movie that scared the shit out of me as a kid that I still watch now for shits and giggles and I could never get enough of Mrs.Doubtfire and many other movies :( So incredibly sad

    We shared the same birthday. Birthdays will never be the same for me now.  Cry

    Mork and Mindy was my favorite tv show when I was little.  Also love Hook, Dead Poets Society, Mrs Doubtfire, and many others. What a great talent, what a great loss.

    Very sad to hear this.

    One of my favourite films of his, besides all his comedies, was 'What Dreams May Come'. It's about a guy dealing with his wife's suicide. Beautiful movie. I am going to have to rewatch it.

    "Mrs. Doubtfire" ...Jumanji.. were some of the best movies I ever saw from west in recent times.. I think he was one of the nicest guys of American Movie Theater

    I loved watching Robin Williams' movies. Though some people argued that his comedic style had grown stale and out of touch of late I always thought that he was a very versatile actor. The film 'Awakenings' demonstrated that he could take on dramatic roles and it was one of the few films that I watched as a child which had an emotional impact on me. Also, I remember waking up in the mornings to watch Mork and Mindy on Channel 4 and thinking this 'this has to be the funniest guy out there'. Williams' comedies were fun for all the family and both my parents enjoyed his work. A sad loss.

    I must say my mind got blown a little by seeing people in Gaza mourning his death on Facebook.

    Yeah, I was up most of the night talking to people on Twitter about this. I'm devastated. Coming so soon after Rik Mayall too Cry. But in Williams' case a suicide through depression. Damn.

    I was really taken aback when I saw the title of this thread out of the corner of my eye.

    Very sad news. I have always loved his films. He comes across as a very warm and truly nice guy.

    Having said that - and I don't know what was going through his mind - but I can totally relate to those who reach a point where they just don't want to go on.

    Personally I think life mostly sucks. Sometimes and for some people it doesn't. But for most on this planet it sucks big time - and once you reach a certain age it's all downhill too. You can look forward to incontinence pads, baby feeders, loss of hearing, sight and reason and being looked after by a Filipino you don't understand and doesn't understand you. That's if you're lucky.

    George Sanders did the same. Left a note saying something like: "Its been a great life. I've enjoyed it. But now is time to go."

    Sorry to be a downer. But I would feel a hypocrite if I didn't admit I totally understand how someone could want to commit suicide.

    Feel the same oftentimes, but then again I think that both of us still have quite a bit to look forward to.  Smiley

    Not sure if anyone saw the articles in the UK news, i can't provide a link on my phone but Robin williams was on family guy last night just as he died, was something to do with suicide, i usually watch it but missed last nights

    It's all about perception. You're viewing it from a glass half-empty perspective. It's not all doom and gloom if you don't choose to view it that way. One of the happiest periods of my life was the summer I spent in the old country. Most people were poor and didn't have much by Western standards but they were happy, you could almost feel the happiness and liveliness in the air, and it rubbed off on me and made me happy and carefree. Depression is much more common in Western societies than in Eastern ones, despite life being objectively worse in a lot of those societies. I've read somewhere that people who reflect and contemplate more are more prone to depression, as are people who are more ambitious than average. It's all in our minds.
