    A lot of people vote for the main parties here because they assume to do anything else is to waste a vote and possibly siphon a significant portion of votes in a more organized push from what they consider to be the lesser of two evils.

    If it was up to me I would go in boots on the grounds WW2 style with long term occupation. Militant groups and militias would be eradicated either peacefully or with force. Collateral damage would be high and the media would be suppressed. Iraq would be dismantled into new nations. However the West is weak in the knees when it comes to war these days. We turned a blind eye to Turkey oppressing minorities, heck we invited them to NATO and supplied them with weapons they could never develop on their own. For every group we "save" we damn a different group by supporting people that commit crimes against humanity. Heck Kurdish groups were branded terrorists years ago yet now we are helping the same group since it started flooding into the area.

    Foreign policy is inconsistent and that is a huge issue for me.

    Labour and Conservative, Democrat and Republican, dominate the political landscape in their respective countries and as a result most people see other parties as a wasted votes. People do not vote for a minority party because there is so little chance of them getting in, they would rather vote for the least bad of the big parties.

    I know so many people who reluctantly voted for Labour in the last general election and I'm sure there are many people who have reluctantly voted for conservative as well.

    Yes but some people DO still vote for those smaller parties, and the more people that vote for them, the more the larger parties will need to change their positions to attract a wider scope. That is how democracy works, it usually gravitates into a two party system naturally as the successful parties try to appeal to a wider and wider electorate. And if they can't do that then they will be replaced by a smaller party that can. Once upon a time Labour itself was a small party, and the two main parties were the Tories and the Liberal party (which no longer exists).

    I still don't think it's fair to draw the conclusion that those who vote for the primary parties must be at least mildly satisfied with their representation. Even if the tables turn eventually, in the meantime, a lot of people (myself included) have voted for a primary party knowing full well that, at best, to vote for the party I really wanted was a wasted vote.

    Or, at the worst, if a ton of us who normally vote Republican, for example, decide to back a Libertarian candidate, at least the first time around it's more likely that the party we voted for will fail and that the one that we really don't want to see in charge will have an advantage over the Republican party for it. Often, a vote is less a vote for that party and more of one against the one you really want to stick it to.

    Although I agree with what Russell Brand says about the economic and political system, and the failure of democracy, I do think that he is a bit wishy washy about religion. I think he sees religion as individual faith for individual people rather than a mass political movement. Also I do agree that there is no real solution to the problems of our governments in his politics.

    I will have to read the book - all of the reviews on this book that I have read, both positive and negative, seem to be using snippets from the book to support the reviewers opinion on Brand.

    I've been re-reading Thomas Paine recently. A true revolutionary who participated in the debates on the French and American revolution, supported them both in the face of personal cost, wrote of natural laws and the need for the uprising of the people when their natural rights are violated. What a great man. He also wrote some of the most radical critiques of religion ever penned. He realised that revolutionary spirit couldn't be sequestered from religion and its authority. Clericalism is oppressive. How insipid of a self declared revolutionary today to say religion must be protected and in fact religion has to be placed central to the 'revolution'. This isn't revolution, its reactionary privilege in disguise.
