    I guess most of us here are Atheist and believe there is no God. Although I still don't know how we ended up on Earth, what are your beliefs on it?

    I had a conversation with my friend and he brought up 'the first cause argument'. He said, "The first cause argument says that everything in the universe has a cause and that cause must also have a cause. Let's say there is a pen, that came into existence by a person who made it, another person made that person who made the pen and another person made that person who made the person who made the pen, it goes on infinitely. There has to be a first cause, something to start the chain of causes and that is God."

    Another friend had said she believes in evolution and that it was a mistake.

    I certainly don't believe there is a god in the way most people believe. I mean not the personal (and very human) god of most religions. One who takes an active interest in us, answers prayers, parts seas, punishes the 'wicked' and rewards the 'faithful'. I have absolutely no shred of a doubt that this god is a human constructed fiction.

    If there is a god then 'it' is not something that falls within our sphere of understanding. Perhaps the closest I could come to guessing what such an entity might be is some sort of cosmic energy or force of nature.

    On the other hand there may be no god at all, and life just 'happened' - which is no stranger than postulating a god.

    Of course the preface was:

    There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable.

    There is another theory which states that this has already happened.

    Well that implies that God came about from nothing. Or has somehow always existed (if that is possible). In either of those scenarios, some kind of conscious entity exists without having a cause or purpose.

    I am an atheist, so I believe that we most likely came about by chance. But now that we are here, we are able to put our own meaning or purpose on the Universe (sort of like how the Abrahamic God was said to have came about by chance and puts meaning and purpose into the Universe).

    However someone who is quite smart pointed something out to me the other day that I thought was kind of interesting. We were discussing the Fermi Paradox, this is the paradox that since there are billions and billions of stars out there, there must be billions of planets that could support life. Many of these planets are much older than Earth (by billions of years). It took life on Earth less than 4 billion years to start exploring space. So why has no other intelligent life (on other much older worlds) come to find us yet? His answer was that maybe they have already found us and they are just watching us to see how we develop....

    I thought that was a pretty interesting concept that would solve the paradox quite neatly.

    Don't understand why any weight is put into the Fermi "Paradox". It was just a casual conversation between Fermi and his colleagues.

    I would say it's a combination of several things. The possible rarity of life, the likely long distance between said life and the incredibly long time it would be needed to go from Point A to B, the rarity of two or more self-aware, intelligent species, with compatible communication methods, existing in a compatible time frame, the numerous things that can cause the extinction of said life before contact, etc. etc.

    Yes I think all of that is pretty reasonable.

    But look how far we have come in the last 100 years. Imagine how far we will have gone in the next 100,000 years. But still this is only the beginning in terms of the life of our Solar System. And imagine how far a civilization may have gone with a billion year head start. Even if 99.999% of them go extinct before they reach that level, it still should follow logically that at least 1 would have colonized the entire galaxy by now...
