  • Moving to London. Is Willesden a good area?
     OP - December 09, 2014, 05:02 PM

    Hey folks,
I am currently living in Brampton Ontario, but Ill be moving to London England in January for university. I'll be living there for 6 months.

I have quite a few relatives who live in the city, and I just wanted to know the best place to live with a low budget. My cousin has an apartment in Willesden - and I just wanted to know whether it is a good place? I want to experience the true flavour of the city - so I am not too concerned if it is too far away from my university which is in Mile End (Queen Mary). I am also being offered accommodation in Finchley and Golders Green as well - but it is apparently too suburban?

Also would you say that London is better than New York?  I lived in the big Apple (Queens) for 2 months and I had the time of my life.

I grew up in Finchley and in my unbiased opinion it is the best part of London. grin12

Hampstead is nice. But both Hampstead and Finchley are quite expensive.

Willesden is cheaper. I lived there for a few years too. It's a very culturally mixed area. Almost every conceivable, ethnicity, nation, religion, race, language... you can imagine.

There is no one flavour to London. It's several areas with their own flavour. I prefer the suburbs myself as I grew up there. But it depends what you are after. Willesden is certainly a great place for the mix of cultures.

I'm an exiled West Londoner, so can reply without Abu Ali's loathsome bias.

Go for Finchley or Golder's Green. Better transport, better charity shops, better bagels.

I just typed Willesden into YouTube and I found quite a few ghetto video's  Cheesy To be fair I find these areas quite exciting. I remember going for a night out with my friends in NYC and getting lost somewhere north of Central Park - although it was scary as hell - it was good fun in retrospect.

On the video someone wrote "You must be dizzy if you don't think willesden doesn't have any gangs, I dare you to go out at night in willesden that's when all the gangs come out. Its fucking crazy at night all the time you hear police cars people screaming this happens on a daily basis. Its fucking annyoing when I go out in the night In willesden I always get harrased but rt I now bare man wiv 45s willesden is a mad house end of."

The cheapest accommodation I'm getting is Wembley Student accommodation http://www.aptstudents.com - Is it a good place? I think its close to that soccer stadium.

By the way do any of you Londoners know how to get soccer tickets for White Hart Lane. I used to be a Arsenal supporter but I converted. Arsenal are too well supported a club to call as my own - and Tottenham are quite traditional and I loved Bale a few years ago!

London has a lot of ghettoes. Mile End is a bit of a ghetto too.

Unless you're really rich, any place in London you're going to be living is going to be a bit of a rough area. But you're never more than a tube journey from everywhere else so its all good, you're young and living life.

West london is fine if you're looking for a quieter place, i'm planning on moving down there this summer but i think i will settle in the hertfordshire countryside area just 20 minutes train ride from the centre of london.

I got my first 26" bike from Coop Willesden - is it still there?

When were you last in Mile End I don't recognise your perspective!  Brilliant Persian restaurant next to Park.

One good thing about Mile End is that it has fucking good transport links.

You have Mile end station, Stepney green & Whitechapel all within walking distance. You can also take the 25/205 to Aldgate east, Stratford etc..

Negatives: It's a bit of a shithole, especially early in the morning where the miasma of rubbish/garbage is unreal. This wont really impact you unless you're walking near the park at 5-6am though. It can also be quite dodgy at night due to nearby council estates and stuff, exercise extra caution if you're walking alone. You may also encounter the odd crackhead or two, but they're cool.

That's my very brief summary of the area.

My mind runs, I can never catch it even if I get a head start.

I grew up near there, there were fields and foxes, now there is smoke dirt and traffic everywhere noise hurry push shove, try it on, watch your pockets don't go out at night unless you have to. Home of the serial murder Nilson, but its not his fault of course

@abu Is Finchley Spurs territory then? Or is it mixed with Arsenal?

    Translation.

    zLife HD:
If you think that Willesden doesn't have any gangs, you must be joking. I dare you to go out at night in Willesden as that's when all the gangs come out. It's fucking crazy at night, you constantly hear police cars and people screaming... only a daily basis. It's annoying when I go out in Willesden at night and get constantly harassed but in actuality (rt stands for 'real talk') I know plenty of guys with .45 handguns. (zLife HD is trying to imply that he is safe in his area due to knowing people with guns) Willesden is a bad area. No more needs to be said.

R.Berhane: Shut the fuck up. I live in Willesden and it's relatively quiet.

Well, that was pretty easy to decipher as I've seen worse.

Arsenal is traditionally a South London club, the beef with Tottenham started when we moved north of the river. From my experience, most of the quintessential North Londoners tend to be Spurs supporters as opposed to Gunners. However, areas such as Islington tend to have an Arsenal bias due to The Emirates etc...
I guess we will have to wait for abu to reply because I know fuck all about Finchley :p
