     OP - February 07, 2015, 05:50 PM

I know this book has been discussed before on this forum. I must say I have had it on my bookshelf for a while. And since apperently now when I pretend to pray my mother n little brother can 'hear me typing on my keyboard' I decided to just read in that time. And out of curiosity I decided to start reading this book. A lot of generic stuff in it so far, but i want to quote a few parts of which I would like some opinions on:

This is from chapter two: The western concept of Islam

Because we must of course blame the horrid west for everything that's wrong.

    Quote
Since such people believe in secularism, they have divorced religion from their lives. as a result, all moral boundaries in the way of attaining such a goal are discarded. the result is what we see today: people are willing to go to any means necessary to earn money. they are inventing various forms of entertainment with no moral limits. this has led to spread of such evils as pornography, homosexuality, casual sex and many other open vices.

    Quote
The goal of the average westerner is to enjoy life with every possible form of entretainment and to make as much money as possible in order to acquire more expensive forms of entertainment. Their goal is essentially entertainment, and the means towards such a goal is money

How many of you guys feel you are living to make money and gain the most expensive entertainment forms you can  Huh?

This guy should be called the king of genralisations.

    It's bollocks, why bother?

There is not a single cogent argument to be found, the entire enterprise is a non sequitur.

My neighbours dog could probably construct a better case against secularism.

My mind runs, I can never catch it even if I get a head start.

I have no patience for those who claim the "evils" of secularism.

Accepting secularism means discarding moral boundaries, why?

I can easily affirm moral systems which are consistent with secularism such as moral realism and ethical naturalism.
So far, the first two quotes suggest to me that the author doesn't have the vaguest idea of what morality, ethics and metaethics are, and that they exist independent of both God and religion.

What I would like to know is why people assume all 'immoral' people are godless.
I am sure there are a lot of rapist, porn stars, prostitutes, murderers and so on that believe in some god or the other
How does one jump from secular to immoral??

With a healthy dose of the slippery slope fallacy.

    Example:

    Quote
We cannot unlock our child from the closet because if we do, she will want to roam the house.  If we let her roam the house, she will want to roam the neighborhood.  If she roams the neighborhood, she will get picked up by a stranger in a van, who will sell her in a sex slavery ring in some other country.  Therefore, we should keep her locked up in the closet.

    Quote

    Notice any similarities?

    Ye I see it....

Its also in my opinion a load of ignorance and genralisations. Like your pattern points out, you take one fact and build a bunch of genralisations around it. Its really annoying that so many fall for this.

That's exactly what the slippery slope is Smiley

His argument may sound good at the local masjid, but the author would get nowhere in a serious discussion.

My goal is to live a good life in terms of how I treat others, how dare the author suggest otherwise. If a God exists, and he sends me to hell for doing so, at least I can rest safe in the knowledge that I didn't kowtow to a metaphysical bully. How Ironic , the creation upholds better principles than the creator.

Exactly my goal is to live a life creating beautiful memories and experiencing life while living as a good human being. Money for me is just a resource that sadly we cant live without but its not what I live for by any means.

PPl like this are very hypocritical as they live like everyone else, earning salaries, increasing luxuries in their homes yet making statements like this.

The author would essentialize that statement as just another means of entretainment.

On the other hand, he'd have you submit your life to the pleasure of an imaginary sky being as the alternative, so fuck him.

Its certainly possible to have fun as a Muslim. However, there are plenty of ways to have fun that are not licit for a person who is a Muslim. I'd rather not restrict myself with all that bullshit.

"Possible", yes. But very restricted and not very consistent nor fulfilling if you truly live like a rightous and faithful Muslim. Especially if you're a woman.

Yeah that is some crazy generalization. Living in the West, I would expect to see a lot less humane behaviour and a lot more rich people.
But I don't see them round here.
Perhaps Hollywood has perpetuated some myths about the West. The pastry boxes are NOT pink anywhere else in the US but in SoCal. It's not reality.

Slippery slopes?  Go to the best!

    Quote
Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God

    Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758)
    Enfield, Connecticut
    July 8, 1741

Their foot shall slide in due time. Deuteronomy 32:35

In this verse is threatened the vengeance of God on the wicked unbelieving Israelites, who were God's visible people, and who lived under the means of grace; but who, notwithstanding all God's wonderful works towards them, remained (as vers 28.) void of counsel, having no understanding in them. Under all the cultivations of heaven, they brought forth bitter and poisonous fruit; as in the two verses next preceding the text. -- The expression I have chosen for my text, their foot shall slide in due time, seems to imply the following things, relating to the punishment and destruction to which these wicked Israelites were exposed.

That they were always exposed to destruction; as one that stands or walks in slippery places is always exposed to fall. This is implied in the manner of their destruction coming upon them, being represented by their foot sliding. The same is expressed, Psalm 73:18. "Surely thou didst set them in slippery places; thou castedst them down into destruction."

It implies, that they were always exposed to sudden unexpected destruction. As he that walks in slippery places is every moment liable to fall, he cannot foresee one moment whether he shall stand or fall the next; and when he does fall, he falls at once without warning: Which is also expressed in Psalm 73:18,19. "Surely thou didst set them in slippery places; thou castedst them down into destruction: How are they brought into desolation as in a moment!"

Another thing implied is, that they are liable to fall of themselves, without being thrown down by the hand of another; as he that stands or walks on slippery ground needs nothing but his own weight to throw him down.

That the reason why they are not fallen already and do not fall now is only that God's appointed time is not come. For it is said, that when that due time, or appointed time comes, their foot shall slide. Then they shall be left to fall, as they are inclined by their own weight. God will not hold them up in these slippery places any longer, but will let them go; and then, at that very instant, they shall fall into destruction; as he that stands on such slippery declining ground, on the edge of a pit, he cannot stand alone, when he is let go he immediately falls and is lost.

The observation from the words that I would now insist upon is this. -- "There is nothing that keeps wicked men at any one moment out of hell, but the mere pleasure of God." -- By the mere pleasure of God, I mean his sovereign pleasure, his arbitrary will, restrained by no obligation, hindered by no manner of difficulty, any more than if nothing else but God's mere will had in the least degree, or in any respect whatsoever, any hand in the preservation of wicked men one moment. -- The truth of this observation may appear by the following consideration....
