  • Riddle me this...
     OP - July 18, 2015, 11:38 AM

Someone posts a riddle, the poster with the right answer gets to post the next one. To keep the thread going, the twentieth poster to get it wrong signals the end of the riddle, so the riddler reveals the answer and posts a new one. If one of the first twenty responders asks for the answer, the riddler will provide it and then produce a new riddle. If one of the first twenty posters correctly answers the riddle, they get to post the next one. Number of posters before riddle is automatically answered before the challenge ends may change depending on how popular this thread is.

    Riddle me this...

I am the part of the bat that is not in the sky. I can swim in a lake, in the moonlight, and yet remain dry. What am I?

`But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.
`Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: `we're all mad here. I'm mad.  You're mad.'
`How do you know I'm mad?' said Alice.
`You must be,' said the Cat, `or you wouldn't have come here.'

No, you need to wait for the riddler to confirm or deny.
    A shadow.

Correct. Make sure to say "Riddle me this..."

`But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.
`Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: `we're all mad here. I'm mad.  You're mad.'

Riddles are boring so I'm going to ask a brain teaser instead.

My kitchen drawer contains 10 knives, 11 spoons and 12 forks.

If I randomly pull two things out of my drawer at the same time, what is the probability that both items are of the same kind?

The probability that I will be hit by lightning is higher than the probability of the both items being the same kind. -_-

    Answer.

Here is the answer, I have minimised the text on purpose so nobody sees it by mistake:

    Total utensils = 10+11+12= 33
There are c(33,2)= 528 ways we can pull out 2 utensils from the pile.
Of those 528 ways, there are c(10,2)= 45 ways to pick out knives from the pile.
There are c(11,2)= 55 ways to pick out spoons from the pile.
There are c(12,2)=66 ways to pick out forks from the pile.

Therefore, we have a 166/528 chance to randomly pick out two of the same item.

Ince, don't bs me man :/

If you really used the exact same method including the same exact sentence structure as me, then the following questions will be no problem for you:

Show in more explicit terms, how you get from c(33,2) to 528. You don't use "c" by chance, only those who understood the mathematical concept would've known to use it.

Also, what does the "c" represent?

    33*16 (2^4)=528

So I guess the c stands for the power? Lol
  • Riddle me this...

    Incorrect.

So you've somehow managed to use a correct method which presupposes a correct understanding of "c", without knowing how to use it, at all?

    33*16 (2^4)=528
So I guess the c stands for the power? Lol

This is the more explicit form:

    c(n,r) = n! / r!(n-r)!

    c(33,2) = 33! / 2!(33-2)! = 528

    Anyways, I'm off now.
