     OP - August 16, 2015, 11:06 PM

Hi, I hope you are all well.

I was not aware of the introduction section of this board so I posted my reason for doubting Islam over here: http://www.councilofexmuslims.com/index.php?topic=29185.0

I have a sister who has left Islam and although I was very upset to learn this at first, every day I feel more and more inclined to believe she was right. Thankfully I have an open-minded family who accept her and will accept me whatever decision I make (even if it does cause them pain). It is only my father who could  potentially cut ties with us but I'm sure I could handle that.

Glad to hear your family situation is somewhat liberal so you are free to find your own path through this thing we all as sentient beings have been thrown at without us agreeing called "existence".

Well I don't think I have that much more to say than I did on the misogyny thread. Maybe a mod can move it here?

I'll just restate the most important part.

This isn't to say you should take our word for it. There's no rush, and whether you end up a muslim or an ex-muslim is completely fine. Don't let anyone pressure you either way.

Are there any ex-Muslim meet up groups in the UK? I'm moving to another city soon and thought it would be nice to be able to meet/have a chat with ex-Muslims. My friends are great but they do not understand my struggles because either they were never Muslims or they are and love Islam too much to see any of its flaws. If these groups exist, is it likely that all of the major cities may have them?

I only know of the London one. However, I do believe that others exist.

Maybe there should be a sticky somewhere with the London and Northern meetup links and any other Ex-Muslim/freethinker groups?

Yeah, sorry for being so subtle about my location. It's just as a precaution in the slim chance of someone I know lurking on this forum.

A sticky would be nice Smiley. I'm not moving up North either but since I move a lot, that could also be useful. I will just keep looking.

As a daughter of converts, I'm curious about something. Hope you don't mind me asking.

A lot of people who come from a long line of muslims tend to go through a brainwashing where they're taught to love Mo more than themselves, more than their friends, more than their parents, more than their own children. Was this something you and your sister experienced?

Don't answer if you feel it's too personal.

No, don't worry about it Smiley

We were told that we should love him more than anyone and anything in this world. Maybe part of the reason I experienced this was because I went to a Quran school when I was younger and learned about nearly every aspect of the religion. To be honest I never felt that I could love him that way no matter how hard I tried. When the movie "Innocence of Muslims" came out and caused all of those riots, I was just annoyed at the rioters and didn't think much of the movie. For years I didn't have much passion for defending Muhammad's honour, I guess I was just in denial of my disbelief Tongue

However I do think that when the time comes, my dad will choose Islam over me and my sister.

That's just depressing. You said there's increased religious debates at home, that's not a sign of being open minded then?

Yes, when my sister was home for the summer she would start quite a few of those and my mum has been criticising a number of hadiths but still seems quite devote. Although my dad does debate with us, I think he is in denial that my sister left Islam and that I'm at the brink of it (neither of us has said so to him outright). He probably thinks that we just need guidance, then we'll come back as the righteous Muslim daughters who we used to be Tongue. He sends us lots of hadiths and duaas on Whatsapp every day.

Once reality hits him he'll most likely want nothing more to do with us. I'm confident that the rest of the family will accept me though.

Well, if he wants nothing to do with you because you don't believe his imaginary friend is real, nothing you can do about it.

I think that I'm going to apostatise officially because being any sort of Muslim comes with so many expectations that I can't live up to. When I tried to hang out with the people from the Islamic society, I could tell they looked down on me because of the way I dressed and acted, even though they pretended to be non-judgemental. I could tell by the "advice" they always gave me. I think that I would be freer not being a Muslim.

I really am at a low point in my life as my relationships are a mess and I keep getting hurt. I feel that all the restrictions placed on me up until recently has really held me back from happiness and it's making me resent religion a lot.

     Reply #27 - September 20, 2015, 11:13 PM

It's common for people leaving religion (not just islam) to feel anger/resentment towards their former faith, often feeling like they've been lied to. If you feel that, don't worry. It's normal and resentment will eventually pass.

It really does feel like some of the best years of my life were wasted but it could be worse. I could have not realised that Islam is false until my 30s or 40s. Worse yet I could have wasted my entire life on it. A decade of freedom is better than none at all.
