    Interesting. I see parallels with the European Reconnaissance and Enlightenment periods in the sense of questioning tradition, dogma, doctrine, etc.

    Add to that list, Al-Maʿarri. "The inhabitants of the earth are of two sorts: those with brains, but no religion; and those with religion, but no brains."

    hat-tip, Razib Khan... who reports that one of the local caliphate-fanclubs has destroyed Maʿarri's statue. (Khan blamed ISIS; Wikipedia blamed Nusra.) And so it goes.
