    Hi guys,

Currently I support a UK charity called FareShare that takes food that is rejected or discarded by supermarkets and distributes it across the UK to refugees, the homeless and other charities.

Fortunately, I am lucky enough to be able to do more, and thought what better place to ask about charities making a difference than here where everyone is so passionate!

The causes I am interested in are:
    Helping the less fortunate
    Environment and wildlife conservation
    Education
And of course, helping those oppressed by religion

The scale, impact or location of the charities doesn't matter, as long as they make even a small difference, are accountable and not wasteful.

So please sound off below about charities you think are doing good work and should be supported, or about any other cause that you feel strongly about!

    Hey,

Thanks nice to see, FareShare sounds like a great cause and I'll be looking into it Smiley

For me, I support Shelter, I think it's tragic the amount of people who are homeless in UK, the lack of support that is available from the government just adds to the neglect. Shelter is a great resource, they a phone call away and are always very helpful. Being privileged enough myself to have a secure place to live is important and a basic need which I think everyone should have.

As well as that, any charity that helps children, like Save the children, or NSPCC  they're important to me.

Aside from that, if I come across something that's current like the refugee crisis I try to help there.

I don't know if that helps, but it gives you something Smiley

    Because I am a Girl

It's a sponsorship program where you get to choose the person you sponsor (doesn't have to be a girl) and even write them letters to get to know them and stay in touch. I really like it because it's personal.

Plan International Canada Inc. (the organization that runs the program) is listed as one of the best 100 charities in Canada. You can check out the list here: MoneySense.ca

Oh man, just researching Shelter and the stories are absolutely heart-wrenching. I've recently started volunteering at a reading group at a local school where we go and read with 8-9 year olds that come from disadvantaged backgrounds and don't have anyone at home to read with. I've only been to a couple of sessions yet and already I can tell how much of a difference it makes for the kids in their confidence, happiness and personalities. And this is something as simple as reading - I know what it feels like to think you don't have a home, but I can not even begin to imagine what it must feel like for children to know that they don't even have a steady place to live..

Because it's never in sight, I had not even considered it. Thank you for mentioning it.

I'll be looking into all the other causes you guys have mentioned as well. Thanks! I hope more suggestions keep on coming in - it would be great to raise more awareness of various issues outside the more obvious ones.

    Stay awesome everyone  Wink

Without wishing to sound like a total shit, those heart-wrenching stories bring the grants and donations in.

Kids Company (which was founded by a friend of another of my sisters) knew this.

Regarding Shelter and Kids Company, yes, that's true about the heart-wrenching stories, but I think you get that al lot with big charities, I've had some friends who have dealt with being homeless and because they (Shelter) are so supportive and super helpful, I think it's a great cause, same with Kids Company, shame the companies don't always get the support they need. Also Lassan, you seem like a great guy Smiley

Absolutely agree, and I am very aware of that. That was why I asked the question here and didn't just go off hunting on my own. And this is also part of the research I'm doing, rather than reading what is just the, arguably, marketing material.

Hahah I think that needs to exist now!   Cheesy

It sounds like a great initiative though. Props to your sister for starting it!  Smiley

The refugee crisis in Greece is a case in point. Aid agencies and NGOs are getting criticism from volunteers for parachuting in for photo opportunities and fund raising, without actually doing much to help. It isn't clear where a lot of the money is going. See Eric Kempson talking about this on the refugees thread.
