Germany shaken after group of 1,000 men accused of assaulting 90 women during new year celebration

German leaders have expressed shock over dozens of apparently coordinated sexual assaults against women on New Year's Eve in Cologne blamed on "Arab-looking men", but warned against anti-migrant scapegoating.

Key points:

   Attackers looked as if they were from "Arab or North African region"

   Merkel and Cologne mayor promise tough response to attacks

Chancellor Angela Merkel called for a thorough investigation of the "repugnant" attacks, ranging from groping to at least one reported rape, allegedly committed in a large crowd during festivities outside the city's main train station and cathedral.

Police said they had received 90 criminal complaints and quoted witnesses as saying groups of 20-30 young men "who appeared to be of Arab or North African origin" had surrounded victims, assaulted them and in several cases robbed them.

A plain-clothes policewoman was reportedly among those attacked, and the northern port city of Hamburg also reported around 10 similar attacks.

"We assume more people will come forward," police chief Wolfgang Albers said.

Katja, 28, said she was with three friends outside the station when they encountered a group of "foreign-looking men".

"Suddenly I felt a hand on my bottom, then on my breasts, then I was groped everywhere," she told Cologne tabloid Express.

"It was horrible. Although we screamed and flailed about, the guys didn't stop. I was beside myself and think that I was touched about 100 times across around 200 metres."

A woman in her 30s interviewed on rolling news channel N24 said she was groped by a group of "Arab-looking men".

"They didn't look at me aggressively, they seemed more curious than anything, and a little drunk. I was furious," she said.

Yes, on new years eve several cases of sexual molestation and groping were reported in Germany, the worst of them occured in Cologne. Allegdly about a thousand young men (of northern african and arab apperance) mugged, groped and molested women during new years eve celebrations at the main train station of the city. The attacks were planned and coordinated.

This incident is sure to create anti-muslim sentiments, but when some muslims are behaving like this, and the response from the muslim community is "prove they are actually muslims", can you really blame germans becoming skeptical of muslims?

Colognes' mayor has responded by advising women to keep men at arms length and dress conservatively in case men from other cultures get confused.....

I'm sure the mayor of Cologne is a decent person and all, but she really seems like someone who's become so open minded her brains have fallen out. A large group of men described as Arab or N African go on the rampage throwing fireworks at passersby and sexually assaulting women, and she recommends that more cultural understanding is needed.......from German women!

This is what happens when you accept a gigantic influx of migrants from the third world all at once.

Immigration is supposed to be letting relatively small groups of people come in slowly so they can completely integrate over a couple generations.

Otherwise you end up with fundamentalist salafi and islamist ghettos like in Britain.

That there are people going out of their way to make excuses for this and claiming that calling out the migrants/refugees for such behaviour is racist is quite frankly APPALLING.

When news came out that Norway was running a course to teach migrants how to treat women with respect due to reports of sexual harassment and assault, someone actually said "omg this is racist and cultural imperialism!" I immediately tore into them for that.

i think that was a good idea…even in the article the migrant said hed learned something. such classes should be mandatory and they should have classes for women where they tell them about their rights.

Yes, and there should be strict punishments for immigrants who are found to be behaving like this.

Anyway, there should be no denying that there are some serious cultural issues that need to be worked out--and have needed to be worked out--long before these people became immigrants in some of these communities. For you and I to pretend there isn't is to betray each other (for those of us who contended with it and still might), and for the rest of the women who have to deal with the results of these mentalities that most of us all know.

To make this a crime of all Muslims and immigrants is also a betrayal, and especially to the Muslims who are truly the ones who can and will have to address these mentalities where they are found.

Can anyone actually answer how people determine that there were 1000 men who assaulted women rather than 10 or 20,999, 30, 5. Title says ''Germany shaken after group of 1,000 men accused of assaulting 90 women during new year celebration''
Are there 1000 in custody or 1000 suspects with 10/111/203 or 5 perpetrators?
