Reading Silk Roads, Frankopan, and I get the impression that Islam was not that important in spreading knowledge.

Everywhere from Rome to China has been in continual contact for four thousand years, possibly longer.  Alexander the Great had huge repercussions, Buddhism might not even have statues if it wasn't for the Greeks!

So a huge area slowly builds up ideas and continually shares them around - the Mongols were using very modern warfare techniques used by the crusaders!  They were aware they were weak at sea warfare and thus targetted areas to get those skills - they massacred very selectively, more to get obedience, but carefully kept the best workers and thinkers!

That is an old idea, conquerors always looked for skilled compliant people - it seems at least one group of conquerors took on the religion of the conquered because that made life easier!

One group actually asked religious representatives what is the best religion, and then asked which is second best. Xians said Judaism was better than Islam, Muslems said Judaism was better than xianity.

    They converted to Judaism!

So I propose religion should really seen as a fashion, a means of control.  Good leaders will always encourage knowlege and that causes wealth creation and more power.  The religion of an area hasnt really much to do with it, and possibly it is the other way round - a response to poverty is religion, but actually that tends to make things worse.

When you are a Bear of Very Little Brain, and you Think of Things, you find sometimes that a Thing which seemed very Thingish inside you is quite different when it gets out into the open and has other people looking at it.
