A surprise visit by US President George Bush to Iraq has been overshadowed by an incident in which two shoes were thrown at him during a news conference.

An Iraqi journalist was wrestled to the floor by security guards after he called Mr Bush "a dog" and threw his footwear, just missing the president.

The soles of shoes are considered the ultimate insult in Arab culture.

    Another shoe bomber?

I remember a while ago when Tony Blair was still Prime Minister and he met with Muammar Gaddafi and all the media outlets showed them sitting together for a press conference and Gaddafi had his legs crossed in such a way that the bottom of his shoe was facing Blair.  I caught the message that sent right away and was quite surprised that Tony Blair nor any of his advisors caught on...

Nour, you're assuming that Blair and Co actually would give a shit about Gaddafi's opinions on anything. My bet is they were aware of it and pretended to not be aware.

Nah. Nobody would throw away a good pair of Nikes. Anyway Doc Martens would hurt more if they connected. Go the steel caps.

Throwing shoes is so last year anyway.  They should have thrown a custard pie, like Bill Gates got when he visited the EU Parliament.

Nice, an IED on a shoestring budget.

Well,  knowing the US military and their pencant for exacting an exponential amount of vengeance for the merest slight, I kinda doubt it, but I will keep my fingers crossed anyway and hope he gets released soon.

    Damn.
    I suspected as much.
They wanted the cameramen to stop filming when it happened. They wanted to beat him there and then.
    Did you hear his cries?

The Americans, their puppets and traiters, are not even concerned that the world is watching to see how he will get treat.

I take the opposite view. The guy is extremely lucky he didn't get a bullet in his head. You can be sure Bush's security staff would have got a dressing down considering a second shoe was actually thrown.

Besides it seems if he did get a beating it would have been from the Maliki crowd and not Bush's as Maliki was more embarrassed about it than Bush.

And another point. Where were all these brave Iraqis when Saddam was in power.
